Chile accelerates $4.1 billion energy storage construction projects

Chile is undergoing a transformative shift in its energy sector, marked by a significant surge in energy storage construction. According to the Energy Sector Construction and Investment Projects Report released by the Chilean Ministry of Energy in March, the country currently has 38 energy storage systems under construction. These projects represent a combined capacity of 4,597 MW and 18,780 MWh, with a total investment of US$ 4.1 billion. This development is part of a wider expansion in the nation's energy infrastructure, which includes 138 projects under construction, totaling US$ 11.7 billion in investments.

Aiming for ambitious goals years ahead of schedule

Chile's rapid pace of energy storage deployment has dramatically shifted timelines for key energy goals. The report highlights that Chile has already surpassed its 2,000 MW energy storage target for 2030, achieving this milestone by March 2026. Furthermore, the country is on track to meet its 6,000 MW storage goal for 2050 by the end of 2026 or early 2027 - more than two decades ahead of schedule.

"What once seemed like a long-term goal is now gaining industrial delivery pace", the report stated, emphasizing the remarkable speed at which energy storage projects are being developed and implemented.

The numbers behind Chile’s energy revolution

The impressive scale of Chile’s energy storage progress is underscored by the data. In addition to the 38 systems under construction, the country has 13 systems in the testing phase, which account for 2,119 MW and 9,708 MWh. Two additional systems - BESS Víctor Jara in Tarapacá (200 MW, 1,000 MWh) and BESS Andes III, Phase I in Antofagasta (171 MW, 514 MWh) - were commissioned in March 2026, further contributing to the nation’s energy storage capacity.

This surge in energy storage complements Chile’s broader efforts to expand renewable energy. Non-conventional renewable sources now make up 51% of the nation’s installed power capacity, which exceeded 38,193 MW as of March.

Major projects driving innovation and growth

One of the most significant hubs for energy storage development is Antofagasta, where two major hybrid projects are under construction. The PFV + BESS Cristales project combines 400 MW of solar generation with a 340 MW, 1,360 MWh storage system. Meanwhile, the Pampas Hybrid Project, developed by AES Andes, integrates 348 MW of renewable generation with an additional 340 MW, 1,360 MWh of storage. These large-scale initiatives highlight how energy storage is being developed in tandem with renewable energy projects, rather than as standalone solutions.

A comprehensive approach to energy expansion

Chile’s energy storage boom forms part of a larger expansion of the energy sector. The country currently has 53 power plants under construction, representing 3,325 MW of capacity and US$ 4.605 billion in investment. Solar energy leads this expansion, accounting for 69% of the capacity under construction (2,294 MW) and 51% of the investment (US$ 2.34 billion). Wind energy follows with 793 MW and an investment of US$ 1.561 billion.

Meanwhile, significant investments are also being directed toward transmission infrastructure, with 47 projects under construction totaling 2,096 km of new lines and US$ 3 billion in investment. The largest of these is the HVDC Kimal – Lo Aguirre Electric Transmission Line, a 500 kV, 1,342 km project with a US$ 2 billion price tag.

A glimpse into the future of Chile’s energy sector

Chile’s energy ambitions extend beyond what is currently under construction. As of March, the country had 141 projects under environmental evaluation, totaling US$ 51.664 billion in investments. Of these, 21 are autonomous storage systems, representing 4,625 MW and 23,493 MWh, with an investment of US$ 4.666 billion. Additionally, 105 generation projects, 13 transmission projects, and two green hydrogen initiatives valued at US$ 27 billion are also under review.

This extensive pipeline demonstrates that Chile’s current energy boom is just the beginning of a larger, long-term transformation.

Chile’s global standing in energy innovation

Chile’s remarkable progress in energy storage and renewable integration is redefining its role in the global energy sector. "When a country reaches a goal set for 2030 by March 2026, and by 2027 is already flirting with an objective designed for 2050, what is at stake is not just growth, but a change in status", the report observed. The nation’s ability to rapidly deploy energy storage systems is turning a once-future promise into a current reality, demonstrating how the technology is becoming a central axis of structural change in the energy sector.

If Chile continues at this pace, it could not only achieve its ambitious targets but also set a precedent for other nations to follow in the race toward a more sustainable energy future.
