Equinix, a global leader in colocation services, has revealed plans to construct its fourth data center in Malaysia. The upcoming facility, named KL2, will be located in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city. This development underscores the company’s continued expansion in the region.
KL2 represents a significant investment, with approximately $190 million allocated for its construction. Once completed, the data center will house over 2,200 cabinets. While specific details regarding the facility’s size and IT capacity have not been disclosed, it is expected to bolster infrastructure for advanced technologies. According to Equinix, the KL2 data center will support "AI and high-performance computing" and incorporate liquid cooling technology.
The KL2 facility will be situated less than a kilometer away from Equinix’s existing KL1 data center in Cyberjaya, a planned city just south of Kuala Lumpur. Cyberjaya is known for its focus on technological and scientific innovation, making it a strategic area for data center development.
Equinix previously acquired the 14,300-square-meter (153,924 square feet) plot of land designated for KL2 in July 2024. At the time, the company purchased the parcel for approximately RM23 million ($5.8 million). The proximity of KL2 to KL1 highlights Equinix’s intent to create a robust digital infrastructure hub in the area.
With KL2, Equinix continues to deepen its presence in Malaysia. In addition to the KL1 data center in Cyberjaya, the company operates two other facilities in Johor, JH1, and its expansion, JH2. JH1 was announced in 2022 and became operational in 2024, with JH2 being topped out in 2025. The first phase of JH2, projected to be online by the first quarter of 2027, is set to add 7MW of IT capacity, with plans for the campus to eventually expand to 77MW.
The development of KL2 further reflects Equinix’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for data center services in the region while supporting emerging technology needs.
Equinix’s announcement of the KL2 data center signals continued investment in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure. By focusing on advanced technologies like AI and high-performance computing, alongside sustainable innovations such as liquid cooling, Equinix is positioning itself to meet the evolving needs of businesses and technology ecosystems in Southeast Asia.
