Construction is officially underway on the 300-MW Pioneer Clean Energy Center in Arizona, a project that combines large-scale solar power generation with 1,200 MWh of energy storage. This milestone highlights Arizona's commitment to sustainable energy solutions, catering to its growing electricity needs with advanced renewable infrastructure. The project is a collaboration between BrightNight and Cordelio Power, utilizing Fluence Energy's Gridstack Pro battery energy storage system (BESS).
Designed to address the increasing demand for reliable power driven by Arizona's rapid growth, the Pioneer Clean Energy Center will integrate utility-scale solar energy with long-duration battery storage. This combination will allow energy generated during the day to be stored and dispatched during periods of peak demand, ensuring grid stability and flexibility for the state.
"Pioneer will deliver reliable, dispatchable clean power that Arizona needs to support its rapid growth", said Martin Hermann, CEO of BrightNight. "This project demonstrates how large-scale renewables paired with advanced storage can provide firm capacity and real grid resilience. We are pleased to work with partners who share our commitment to building the next generation of energy infrastructure."
A key component of the project is the deployment of Fluence Energy's Gridstack Pro battery energy storage system, which incorporates U.S.-manufactured battery cells, modules, enclosures, and thermal management systems. Project leaders emphasized the importance of domestic manufacturing in strengthening energy security and supply chain resilience.
"We first put storage on the U.S. grid to meet exactly the kind of reliability needs Arizona is facing, and we have since proven that it can be delivered at massive scale", said John Zahurancik, Chief Customer Success Officer at Fluence. "We are proud to partner on this project, demonstrating that U.S.-made battery systems can meet critical power needs reliably and cost-effectively."
The energy generated and stored by the Pioneer Clean Energy Center will be sold to Arizona Public Service (APS), the state's largest electric utility, through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). This agreement reinforces the role of combined solar and storage projects in meeting utility targets for reliability and clean energy.
Commercial operations for the Pioneer Clean Energy Center are expected to begin by April 2027, marking a significant step toward creating a more sustainable energy future in Arizona.
