Plans to expand Alabama's ambitious $14 billion "Project Marvel" data center are under consideration as a rezoning request for an additional 900 acres is expected to be filed in Bessemer. If approved, the expansion could potentially double the size of the campus, which is already slated to cover 700 acres.

Bessemer City Councilor Cleo King confirmed to Inside Climate News last week that the developer, Logistic Land Investment LLC, intends to seek approval for this significant expansion. However, King noted that "details of the request remain hazy", leaving questions about how the additional land would be utilized and whether the existing plans and construction timelines would be affected.

A Massive Undertaking with Room to Grow

The initial plan for Project Marvel, approved by the Bessemer City Council last November, envisions a sprawling data center campus. It includes 18 buildings and a capacity of 1.2GW, with construction expected to take around seven years to complete. The potential expansion would increase the project’s footprint beyond its current scope, though specifics about what the developer plans to build on the additional 900 acres remain unknown.

Logistic Land Investment, owned by Atlanta-based TPA Group, has a history of large-scale data center developments, including a filing in July 2024 to build a similar facility in Venus, Texas. For Project Marvel, the Bessemer site was chosen due to its proximity to Birmingham, one of Alabama’s key data center hubs. Bessemer itself, however, currently has no operational data centers listed, according to Data Center Map.
