Amazon said it will invest $10 billion in a planned data center campus in Montgomery County, Missouri, marking one of the largest elements of a broader local package announced June 15.
The project, known as Project Green, is planned for 1,000 acres in New Florence, Montgomery County, in the northeast quadrant of the Interstate 70 and Highway 19 interchange. According to filings cited in the announcement, AWS plans to build the campus in two phases. The first phase would include eight data center buildings, while the second could add 13 more buildings of a similar size.
Alongside the main investment, Amazon said it will provide $3 million to support local emergency dispatches, $3m for community programs, and $1m for a new "community gathering space."
Amazon is also working with Ameren Missouri, the local utility, to make sure costs tied to the project are not passed on to other ratepayers. The company has also invested in a 138MW renewable energy project in Missouri.
Plans for the campus also include multiple stormwater management ponds, three wells, and an on-site wastewater and water treatment plant.
"Missouri has been home to Amazon since 2017, and more than 10,000 Missourians come to work with us every day. Today's announcement reflects what we've learned over those years: that when you show up as a real partner, listen to the community, and invest for the long term, everyone benefits", said David Zapolsky, chief global affairs and legal officer at Amazon. "We're building data centers that will create hundreds of new jobs, support educators and students, and strengthen local infrastructure."
State officials said the project reflects coordination among local and state partners.
"Behind every major investment are local leaders, utility partners, educators, and community members working together to create opportunities for the future", added Michelle Hataway, director of the Missouri Department of Economic Development. "Amazon’s announcement in Montgomery County is a testament to what can be accomplished through strong collaboration and a shared commitment to growth. This project will help strengthen the region’s capacity for future development while reinforcing Missouri’s position as a destination for innovation and investment."
