Amazon has announced plans to invest €33.7 billion ($39.8 billion) in Spain to expand its data center infrastructure and support advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing across Europe. The investment, revealed during MWC26 Barcelona, marks the company’s largest technology commitment in Spain and coincides with its 15th anniversary of operations in the country.
The €33.7 billion investment will primarily benefit the AWS Europe (Spain) Region, located in Aragón. Amazon expects this initiative to contribute €31.7 billion to Spain's GDP through 2035 and support approximately 29,900 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses. Of these, 6,700 are direct Amazon jobs, ranging from skilled data center operations staff to construction workers and security personnel supporting the facilities.
Amazon has also committed to building supply chain facilities in Aragón that will directly support its data center operations. These facilities, which include a server manufacturing plant and a dedicated AI and machine learning server repair center, are projected to create approximately 1,800 jobs in the region.
David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, emphasized the long-term significance of this investment, stating, "As Amazon marks 15 years in Spain, this new infrastructure investment reinforces our long-term commitment and will be pivotal for the country’s digital and economic future. We’re supporting Europe’s digital capabilities and expanding cloud and AI infrastructure that businesses and organizations are already using to grow and innovate."
Aragón, the focal point of Amazon’s data center expansion, stands poised to emerge as a major European digital hub. More than half of the €33.7 billion investment will be concentrated in the region, contributing €18.5 billion to Aragón's regional GDP through 2035 and supporting an estimated 13,400 full-time equivalent jobs annually in local businesses. Of these, 4,200 are direct Amazon jobs.
The planned facilities will also mark the first data centers in the province of Teruel, alongside new operations in Huesca and Zaragoza. Ángel Bernad, COO and founder of ALAN COMMISSIONING, a local company specializing in data center infrastructure, spoke of the impact: "The arrival of AWS infrastructure in Aragón allowed us to specialize in services for data centers and, thanks to this opportunity, we have expanded our offering. Today ALAN COMMISSIONING has a team of 65 professionals and is a reference in the infrastructure industry."
In addition to its economic and technological contributions, Amazon has pledged €30 million toward community programs in Spain through 2035. These initiatives will focus on education, sustainability, social impact, and local development, benefiting regions where Amazon operates its infrastructure. Since 2023, Amazon has supported over 100 community programs in Aragón, including technology partnerships with local football clubs and educational robotics training for students.
Amazon is furthering its environmental efforts in Spain, with investments in 100 solar and wind energy projects, including seven new solar farms. In Aragón specifically, AWS data centers have matched electricity use with 100% renewable energy since opening in 2022. The company has also committed to achieving water positivity by 2030, with projects in Aragón addressing water loss, supporting flood management, and improving agricultural water efficiency.
Miguel Angel Ferrer, agricultural director at Finca El Forado, highlighted the impact of AWS-powered smart irrigation on his farm: "By analyzing 50 to 100 data points - from soil moisture to weather forecasts - we now know exactly when, where, and how much to irrigate. We’re saving up to 50% of our water annually, around 93 million liters, improving our harvests, and reducing costs."
Since launching its AWS Region in Aragón in November 2022, Amazon has played a key role in driving digital transformation across Spain and Europe. Businesses and public institutions, including Telefónica, Iberdrola, and the Spanish Red Cross, have leveraged AWS to modernize their operations. Amazon has also trained over 200,000 people in digital skills since 2017 and aims to train 500,000 more students in AI and digital skills by 2027.
Pedro Sánchez, President of the Government of Spain, attended the announcement at MWC26 Barcelona, underscoring the partnership between Spain and Amazon. As Amazon continues to invest in data center infrastructure and community programs, the initiative is set to play a pivotal role in advancing Spain’s economic and digital future.
Zapolsky summarized the company’s vision: "This is a long-term bet on Spain, and we’re proud to make it."
