Digital Realty Expands Reach with Acquisition of Bulgarian Operator Telepoint

Digital Realty, a global leader in data center services, has broadened its footprint in Eastern Europe with the acquisition of Bulgarian data center operator Telepoint. This move marks the company's first foray into Bulgaria, strengthening its presence in the region.

The acquisition includes two of Telepoint's facilities located in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, a city that has become a central hub for the country’s data center industry. Both facilities, Telepoint Sofia Center and Telepoint Sofia East, are carrier-neutral colocation sites that support diverse connectivity options.

"Sofia is a thriving hub for connectivity in Southeast Europe", said Managing Director EMEA Paula Cogan. "This expansion strengthens and complements our interconnection platform and helps customers reach end users faster, while tapping into a market that’s growing rapidly and attracting innovation."

While details of the acquisition remain limited, one aspect of the deal remains unclear: whether Telepoint's third facility, located in Montana, is included. According to Telepoint's website, its three facilities collectively span 9,000 square meters and offer a total capacity of 14.8MW, accommodating approximately 75,235 racks. Telepoint has been operational since 2009, with its Montana site opening in 2017 and the Sofia East location launching in 2018.

Even though Bulgaria is not yet a prominent hub in the global data center market - housing only 31 facilities according to Data Center Map - this acquisition positions Digital Realty to tap into the region's growing connectivity potential. The company already maintains a presence in other southeastern European countries, including Greece and Croatia, and operates clusters in most western European markets.

This move follows Digital Realty’s recent entry into Malaysia earlier this year, where it acquired a 1.5MW data center near Kuala Lumpur. As the company continues to expand globally, the addition of Bulgarian facilities solidifies its commitment to enhancing interconnection opportunities in underserved but promising markets.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, leaving room for speculation about future developments in Digital Realty’s growing European portfolio.
