How is a GNC Engineer different from a Flight Controls or Avionics Engineer?

A GNC Engineer owns the algorithms — guidance, navigation and control — and the analysis that proves them. A Flight Controls Engineer is usually the control-law slice of that same job, common on aircraft programs where navigation sits with a separate group. An Avionics Engineer owns the hardware those algorithms run on: flight computers, sensors, actuator electronics and harnessing. If the hire has to decide how the vehicle steers, hire the GNC profile; if the hire has to build the box it steers with, hire avionics.

GNC Engineer versus Systems Engineer or Controls and Automation Engineer — which do I need?

A Systems Engineer owns requirements, interfaces and verification across the whole vehicle and depends on GNC for the flight dynamics answers. A Controls and Automation Engineer works on PLC and industrial control for plants and test stands, not flight vehicles — a different discipline with overlapping vocabulary. Programs that confuse the two lose months. If the seat writes the control law that flies, it is a GNC seat.

Do you require a specific degree or certification?

No certification exists for GNC, and we do not screen on one. Most candidates hold an MS or PhD in aerospace or a related engineering field, and a strong BS with flown-vehicle ownership outranks an advanced degree with simulation-only work. We verify degree, U.S.-person status where ITAR applies and any active clearance, then weight reference-verified algorithm ownership above all of it.

Can you recruit GNC Engineers for ITAR-controlled or cleared programs?

Yes. Nearly every GNC seat in space and defense-tech is ITAR-controlled.
