The Facilities Engineer owns the building systems inside the walls once they are operating. The Infrastructure Engineer owns the site-level systems that feed those buildings — utility interconnect, MV distribution, central plants, water and gas, pads and test stands — and carries new infrastructure from concept through commissioning. On a large campus the two hand off at the building tie-in.

How is an Infrastructure Engineer different from a Power Systems Engineer or Utilities Engineer?

A Power Systems Engineer goes deep on electrical studies, protection and interconnect for one discipline. A Utilities Engineer runs the plant’s generation and distribution of steam, chilled water, compressed air and gases. The Infrastructure Engineer spans disciplines at the site level and is usually the program owner who sequences all of them against capacity needs.

Do you require a PE?

Depends on the seat. Owner-side infrastructure program roles usually do not require a stamp, and an EIT or PMP-holding engineer with launch, test or campus delivery history can be the stronger hire. Engineer-of-record and utility-facing design roles typically need a PE in the project state. We confirm the requirement during scoping and verify status directly.
