In a landmark development for central Louisiana, Dallas-based digital infrastructure builder Applied Digital has officially launched construction on a $3.6 billion artificial intelligence (AI) campus in Rapides Parish. The project, named Delta Forge 1, aims to advance large-scale AI training and inference capabilities, marking a significant investment in the region’s tech infrastructure.

A Major Economic and Technological Undertaking

Delta Forge 1 will cover 300 acres and initially feature two facilities capable of delivering 300 megawatts of critical IT load. Power for the site will be supplied by Cleco, the local electric utility, with a sustainable closed-loop cooling system in place to minimize water usage. Construction at the site began in January, with operations expected to commence by mid-2027.

The project is set to generate a substantial economic impact in Louisiana. Applied Digital estimates the creation of 200 direct jobs, with salaries 150% above the state’s average wage, in addition to supporting more than 1,000 construction jobs at peak building activity.

Louisiana Economic Development has confirmed the state’s support for the project through a sales and use tax exemption for qualifying purchases or leases of data center equipment.

Strategic Importance for Louisiana’s Economy

Governor Jeff Landry highlighted the broader significance of the initiative during a press conference announcing the project. "Global companies are choosing Louisiana because they see a state where every region is prepared to deliver at scale, with the infrastructure, workforce and leadership needed to support the technologies and industries shaping the future economy", said Landry.

Applied Digital has not disclosed the name of any potential tenants for the data center, but discussions have reportedly been held with a possible hyperscaler tenant, according to Ralph Hennessy, executive director of the England Airpark. No tenant was confirmed as part of Tuesday’s announcement.

Boosting Louisiana’s AI and Data Infrastructure

Delta Forge 1 is purpose-built for the growing demand in AI-driven workloads. With its advanced facilities and strategic location in central Louisiana, this development positions the state to play a key role in the future of AI technology and data infrastructure.

This ambitious project underscores Louisiana’s growing appeal as a destination for major global tech investments, further solidifying its status as a hub for cutting-edge industries. Applied Digital’s investment represents a significant step forward for both the state and the broader digital economy.
