EdgeConneX has officially started construction on a new, cutting-edge data center campus located in Kyotanabe, a city in the Greater Osaka region of Japan. This marks the company’s first data center development in the country, in collaboration with Kagoya Asset Management.
The new campus, which will span an impressive 130,000 square meters (1.4 million square feet), is designed to support 200MW of capacity and meet the growing demand for AI-ready digital infrastructure. The first phase, offering 28MW, is expected to become operational by the first quarter of 2028 and will include advanced features like liquid cooling.
"Breaking ground on our first data center campus in Japan is a landmark moment for EdgeConneX and a significant step in our strategy to bring advanced, AI-ready infrastructure to this critical market", said Sam Lee, managing director, market and commercial development APAC at EdgeConneX.
EdgeConneX aims to establish Osaka as a hub for advanced IT infrastructure with a total planned capacity of 350MW across the region. This initiative positions Osaka as a prime destination for cloud and AI adoption as businesses accelerate digital transformation.
"We are proud to stand alongside EdgeConneX as they reach this pivotal milestone in the Kansai region", said Sadahiro Kitagawa, president and representative director of Kagoya Asset Management. "The development of a large-scale AI-ready campus in Greater Osaka is a testament to Japan’s growing need for robust, next-generation digital infrastructure. By introducing this level of capacity and technical sophistication, EdgeConneX is not only strengthening the local ecosystem but also empowering businesses to accelerate their digital transformation and embrace the future of AI with confidence."
This Osaka project is part of EdgeConneX’s broader expansion into Japan. The company is also working on a second data center in Yawata, Kyoto Prefecture, through a partnership with Keihan Real Estate. The first phase of the Yawata facility, offering 36MW, is set to go live in 2028.
Founded in 2009, EdgeConneX has grown from its initial focus on smaller-scale data centers in the United States to managing a global portfolio of 80 data centers across more than 50 markets in North America, Europe, APAC, and South America. In addition to the projects in Japan, EdgeConneX is developing facilities across Asia, including in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
With its forward-looking developments in Osaka and beyond, EdgeConneX is positioned to play a significant role in meeting the increasing demands for cloud and AI-ready infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region.
