HD Hyundai has signed a deal with Kiewit to establish a US shipbuilding joint venture that plans to start building a smart shipyard in 2027, with operations targeted for 2029.
The venture, named HD Kiewit Shipbuilding, expects the shipyard to employ 3,000 local workers once operational. It will pursue opportunities to build US Navy auxiliary vessels and commercial ships.
HD Hyundai said the agreement with Kiewit, a US construction, engineering and infrastructure company, was signed in Houston on Oct. 22 local time.
The planned shipyard will use a future shipyard model designed by HD Hyundai, incorporating digital twins, automated production systems and robotic welding. Data will guide the full process, from design through production.
Beyond building vessels, HD Kiewit Shipbuilding is considering supplying ship blocks and modules to US shipyards. The joint venture also plans to extend its cooperation into port infrastructure in the future.
