Meta said it will invest more than CA$13 billion to build a new data center campus in Sturgeon County, Alberta, marking a major addition to the region's digital infrastructure pipeline.
The planned Sturgeon Data Centre is designed as a 1-gigawatt facility. Alongside the main buildout, the project includes about CA$60 million in local infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to roads and water systems to support both construction and long-term operations.
Construction is expected to bring a large workforce to the site, with about 3,000 workers anticipated onsite during peak activity. Once the facility is operating, it is expected to employ more than 300 people.
Meta said the campus will be supported by new electrical generation and transmission infrastructure developed with Alberta's energy partners. The company also said it will pay for the infrastructure needed to meet the site's electricity demand, including investments in power generation and grid upgrades.
In addition, Meta said it plans to match the facility's electricity consumption with clean energy resources.
The company said the campus will use a closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry cooling technology to reduce operational water use. It is also supporting watershed conservation efforts in Alberta through environmental partnerships.
Frost Collective, a joint venture between Clark Builders and PCL Construction, has been named general contractor for the project.
The development adds to construction activity tied to hyperscale data centers in North America, which the source article said require large-scale site development, utility expansion, power infrastructure, and specialized building systems. It also said projects of this scale create sustained work across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and utility sectors while driving investment in regional infrastructure.
