Meta said its Eagle Mountain Data Center in Utah is expanding, pushing the company’s investment in the state to more than $3 billion and adding to a project that is expected to support more than 1,200 construction workers at peak construction and more than 300 data center jobs once completed.
The company said the expansion also comes with new local commitments in Eagle Mountain, including funding for parks, schools, housing, infrastructure, water projects, and energy development tied to the data center’s operations.
In announcing the expansion, Meta said, "Today, Meta is thrilled to announce the Eagle Mountain Data Center is growing."
According to the company, the larger project will raise its total Utah investment to more than $3 billion. Meta said peak construction will support more than 1,200 workers, while the completed data center will support more than 300 jobs.
Meta said it has been operating in Eagle Mountain since breaking ground in 2018.
As part of what Meta described as its support for communities where it operates, the company said its Future Is for Everyone Fund is a $1 billion commitment to invest directly in U.S. communities where Meta owns and operates data centers, including Eagle Mountain.
In Eagle Mountain, Meta said it is providing a $450,000 grant to the City of Eagle Mountain for construction of the Walden Park Astronomy Park, bringing its total contribution to $700,000. The regional facility is planned to include seven telescopes, a retractable roof, and year-round STEM education, community programming, and public stargazing.
The company also said it is investing $600,000 to acquire three acres for a future elementary school in partnership with Lake Mountain School District. In addition, Meta said it is committing $1.5 million to the Lake Mountain Education Foundation, along with an ongoing annual contribution of $50,000 for initiatives that directly support student learning experiences, including early childhood literacy.
Meta said it has contributed more than $6.2 million to local schools and organizations to date. Those contributions include support for hydroponics programs at Cedar Valley High School, Alpine School District’s Christa McAuliffe Space Center, and the Small Business Launchpad at the Valley Crossroads Chamber of Commerce.
The company also said it has contributed $4.85 million to Eagle Mountain City’s Affordable Housing Fund, which it said supports programs such as mortgage assistance for 66 local families.
Meta said it has invested more than $50 million in local infrastructure improvements since arriving in Eagle Mountain, including roads and water infrastructure.
On water use, the company said, "We remain committed to minimizing the environmental impact of our data centers." Meta said its goal is to be water positive in 2030, which it described as restoring more water than it consumes globally where it has owned operations.
For new buildings in Eagle Mountain, Meta said it will use a water-efficient, closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry cooling, meaning there will be no operational water use in the cooling system. The company said onsite water use will be limited to domestic uses, fire protection, and equipment maintenance, and that continued annual operational water use is projected to be less than one typical golf course in the region.
Meta also said it is working with local partners on the Hobble Creek Flow Restoration Project and Provo River Flow Restoration Project, which it said have collectively restored more than 726 million gallons of water per year.
In addition, the company said it has partnered with the city to repurpose a portion of water from its server cooling systems to irrigate Cory Wride Memorial Park.
Meta said energy investments are also part of the Eagle Mountain expansion. "We’re committed to being a positive contributor to Eagle Mountain, and that includes investing in new clean energy."
The company said it pays the full costs of its data centers’ energy use and funds new and upgraded infrastructure needed to support its operations. In Eagle Mountain, Meta said it has fully funded new generation and grid infrastructure, which it said helps improve reliability across the Rocky Mountain Power grid.
Meta also said the Eagle Mountain Data Center’s electricity use is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy. Working with retail partners, the company said it has added more than 1.7 GW of clean and renewable energy and 600MWh of battery storage to Utah across 13 sites. It also said it is supporting the Faraday Energy Storage project, a 150-megawatt battery facility owned and operated by Lydian Energy.
Meta described the expansion as part of a longer-term role in the city. "Since breaking ground in 2018, we have been proud to call Eagle Mountain home and are committed to being a good neighbor", the company said.
It added, "We couldn’t be more proud to call Eagle Mountain home and we look forward to continuing to build the future together as neighbors and partners."
