Microsoft has finalized the acquisition of 190 hectares (469.5 acres) of land on Finland's west coast, signaling its intent to potentially develop a new data center. The property spans the municipalities of Vaasa and Mustasaari, with two-thirds of the land in Vaasa and the remainder in Mustasaari.
The land is situated within the GigaVaasa industrial zone, an area selected for its established industrial infrastructure and suitability for such projects. Teemu Vidgrén, general manager of Microsoft Finland, highlighted the significance of this acquisition, stating: "We are pleased to take this step forward together with Vaasa and Mustasaari. Finland is an important country for us, and we are committed to investing here for the long term. This land acquisition builds on long-term collaboration with local municipalities and authorities. From here, our focus is on working with partners to explore what could be developed on the site, and we will share more as our plans take shape in dialogue with local communities."
The mayor of Vaasa, Tomas Häyry, shared his enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact on the region. "We are very pleased to welcome a trusted, international operator to the GigaVaasa area. If realized, the project will bring additional data and energy expertise, further strengthening our position as a global hub for energy technology", Häyry stated.
Vaasa, located near the Gulf of Bothnia and approximately 420 kilometers (260 miles) from Helsinki, represents a shift in Finland's data center landscape. Historically, most data centers in the country have been concentrated around Helsinki on the southern coast.
Microsoft is already investing heavily in its cloud infrastructure in Finland. The company is currently developing its first cloud region in the country, with projects in Espoo, Vihti, and Kirkkonummi. These data centers are tied to an innovative collaboration with Fortum to provide district heating to nearby communities by recycling waste heat generated from the facilities.
The ongoing construction of Microsoft’s data centers in Espoo and Vihti is reportedly advancing as planned. However, excavation work at the Espoo site is temporarily paused due to the bird-nesting season, with operations set to resume after June 30. In Kirkkonummi, foundation work has begun for a second data center building, while facade and interior construction is progressing on the first building. Earthworks at the Kirkkonummi site were completed in April 2026.
This latest land acquisition in Vaasa reflects Microsoft’s continued commitment to expanding its presence in Finland, though specific details about the project remain under discussion with local authorities and partners. The company has emphasized that it will communicate updates as plans for the site develop further.
