Bechtel reaches substantial completion on Texas LNG project

Bechtel has reached substantial completion on the Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage 3 Project in Gregory, Texas, marking another major milestone in the contractor’s liquefied natural gas work in the state.

Cheniere Energy, the plant’s owner, announced that Bechtel turned over care, custody and control of the seventh and last liquefaction train to the company on Aug. 28. Bechtel began working on the project’s third stage in 2022.

The completion expands Cheniere’s LNG production capacity by over 20% to approximately 56 million tonnes per annum.

The milestone adds to a broader run of LNG work for Bechtel, one of the nation’s largest contractors by revenue. The Reston, Virginia-based builder is also working on other projects for Cheniere. In May, Bechtel secured a $4.69 billion contract to expand Cheniere’s Sabine Pass plant in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

Cheniere linked the Corpus Christi expansion to energy supply pressures affecting global markets.

"This achievement enables us to increase our supply of much-needed secure, reliable and affordable energy to the world at a critical time, while delivering on our commitments to our customers and creating long-term value for our stakeholders", said Jack Fusco, Cheniere’s chairman, president and CEO, in the news release.

The project’s completion comes as broader geopolitical conflicts have disrupted global energy trade. The article noted that the war in Iran has affected the ability of oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, according to CNBC.

Texas has been a key state for Bechtel’s LNG efforts. In June 2025, owner NextDecade awarded the builder $9 billion worth of additional work at the Rio Grande project, on top of the $12 billion it had already won for the first phase. Last September, NextDecade reached financial close on Train 4, a segment of work that represented $4.77 billion for the contractor.
