Australian data center operator NextDC has officially launched its first international data center, KL1, located near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The facility is situated in Seksyen 51a in Petaling Jaya, a city just west of the Malaysian capital.
The newly operational KL1 marks a significant milestone for NextDC as it ventures beyond Australia’s borders. The data center is designed to deliver a total capacity of 65MW upon completion, although the company has not disclosed how much capacity is currently available at launch.
A video from NextDC’s website reveals that KL1 will be developed in five phases, with the first phase offering 15MW of capacity.
According to the company’s website, the facility spans 18,250 square meters (196,441 square feet) of technical space. NextDC has stated that the project represents an investment of AUD$1 billion (US$716 million).
Last June, the company announced that it had secured AUD$5.1 billion (US$3.7 billion) in debt financing to support its ongoing data center expansion. In addition to KL1, NextDC is currently evaluating or planning new data center sites in Tokyo, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; Singapore; and Johor, Malaysia.
With the opening of KL1, NextDC has taken a major step toward its goal of expanding its footprint across the Asia-Pacific region, aligning with its broader strategy for international growth.
