Oracle and OpenAI have begun construction on a major Stargate data center campus in Saline Township, Michigan, in what the companies described as a significant step in the buildout of AI infrastructure in the United States.
The project, called The Barn, held its launch ceremony on June 1, 2026. Related Digital, Blackstone, Oracle, OpenAI, Walbridge, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer were involved in the announcement.
Oracle described the Saline Township development as the single largest economic investment in Michigan’s history. ENR reported the project at approximately $16 billion.
The Saline Township site is part of OpenAI’s broader Stargate infrastructure initiative, which is intended to support the compute demands behind advanced AI systems. OpenAI previously said the Michigan campus would add more than one gigawatt of capacity and be part of its broader partnership with Oracle.
ENR reported that the 250-acre campus is planned to include three 550,000-square-foot single-story buildings and operate at approximately 1.4 GW scale.
Walbridge, a Detroit-based contractor, is leading construction. The company described the project as the largest in its 110-year history. Construction Dive reported that around 700 union tradespeople are currently working under a project labor agreement.
