Reliance Industries has entered into a significant partnership with Meta to develop a 168 MW AI-focused data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This project marks Meta's first built-to-suit data center in India, reflecting the social media giant’s commitment to expanding its global AI infrastructure.
The facility, which is expected to be operational within two years, will address Meta's growing computing and AI demands. The agreement stipulates that Reliance will build, operate, and manage the center, while Meta will lease capacity at the facility. The collaboration also includes plans for potential capacity expansion in the future.
"This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India's digital infrastructure", said Mukesh D. Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited. "Building India’s first built-to-suit data center for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution."
"At Reliance, we are committed to building world-class digital infrastructure that will power the next generation of AI innovation – not just for India, but for the world. Jamnagar will become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing, and we are proud to partner with Meta to make this vision a reality", Ambani added.
Jamnagar in Gujarat was strategically selected due to its infrastructure strengths, including access to renewable energy, water resources, and connectivity. The city is also near India's western submarine cable landing stations and benefits from Reliance’s existing fiber network.
In addition, Jamnagar is home to Reliance's extensive industrial and energy operations, providing access to land, utilities, and operational expertise. This infrastructure foundation makes the location well-suited for power-intensive projects like AI data centers, which require efficient cooling, reliable energy sources, and low-latency connectivity.
The Jamnagar facility will play an integral role in supporting Meta's global AI initiatives, as the demand for training and deploying AI models continues to grow. Reliance said the project demonstrates India's rising prominence in the global AI and digital infrastructure ecosystem.
"Energy availability and cooling efficiency are increasingly becoming key considerations for hyperscale data center projects globally, particularly as AI workloads continue to increase", Reliance noted. The Jamnagar facility will rely on renewable energy and desalinated seawater for cooling, aligning with sustainability goals.
The scale of the project is expected to create opportunities for a wide range of technology and infrastructure partners. From power and cooling systems to networking equipment and long-term managed services, the initiative represents a multi-year infrastructure buildout that could benefit multiple industries.
Reliance emphasized that the project positions the company as a key player in hyperscale AI infrastructure projects, offering end-to-end services across the lifecycle of the data center. This includes design, construction, network connectivity, and operational management.
As global technology firms continue to invest heavily in AI, projects like the Jamnagar facility showcase India's ability to attract large-scale digital infrastructure investments. The collaboration between Reliance and Meta underscores the country’s potential as a hub for cutting-edge AI innovation.
