WALDEVAR Energy and GEN-I Sonce have signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract for a 55 MW/220 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Gheorgheni, Romania, extending a partnership the companies had already established around grid infrastructure in the area.
The agreement follows an earlier deal signed this year for the Gheorgheni 110 kV, 63 MVA Substation. Taken together, the two projects target two parts of Romania’s changing power system identified by the companies in the original announcement: infrastructure to connect reliable and fast-response power generation to the national grid, and storage capacity to help balance the grid.
Under the new contract, WALDEVAR Energy said it will deliver 50MW/220MWh full EPC scope by Q3 2027 for the battery energy storage system, including engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing and commissioning.
The companies described battery storage as an increasingly important part of Europe’s power systems, with BESS used to store electricity when available and release it when needed. In the source material, the project was presented as part of a broader push toward greater grid flexibility and stability as electricity systems become more dynamic.
"For years, the industry’s priority was adding renewable generation. Today, the challenge is making energy available when the system actually needs it. Battery storage is becoming one of the most strategic assets in the energy sector because it provides the flexibility to store energy and discharge it when demand or system conditions require it. Gheorgheni is a strong example of how large-scale BESS can contribute to a more flexible and resilient energy system. This project also marks another important step in our growing partnership with GEN-I Sonce and strengthens WALDEVAR’s capabilities in delivering complex utility-scale BESS projects across Europe," said Cristian Dragomir, CEO of WALDEVAR Energy.
GEN-I Sonce described the Romania battery project as its largest and most important project within the GEN-I Group, as well as its first EPC project with WALDEVAR Energy in Romania.
"This is the largest and most important project for the GEN-I Group and our first EPC project with WALDEVAR Energy in Romania. It is also the first step in a scalable model for how we develop and deliver energy storage projects. We believe the experience gained here will shape the projects that follow, and we are grateful for the trust and support of the local community and authorities in Gheorgheni," Gregor Hudohmet, CEO of GEN-I Sonce added.
Local officials also highlighted the project’s significance for Gheorgheni.
"Today marks the beginning of an important project for Gheorgheni. A battery energy storage project developed by GEN-I Sonce and executed by WALDEVAR Energy will build the infrastructure needed to generate power to the national grid. Years from now, we will be proud of what we built here together," noted Len Emil Balázs, Vice Mayor of Gheorgheni.
The BESS project adds to the companies’ existing cooperation in Gheorgheni and is scheduled for delivery by Q3 2027, according to the contract details provided in the source material.
