Most US Construction Technicians on owner’s and self-perform teams land between $55K and $85K base depending on metro, scopes covered and certifications held. Lead Technicians, and technicians on launch-site programs or 24/7 shift rotations, typically run at the top of that band or above it once shift differential, per diem and overtime are added. The Field Engineer owns the engineering coordination — RFIs, submittals, drawing conflicts, contractor questions — and usually holds or is working toward an engineering degree. The Construction Technician does the technical fieldwork that feeds that coordination: layout checks, tests, inspections, equipment, small self-perform scopes and documentation. If the seat spends its day on the deck with an instrument, a slump cone or a machine, it is a technician role.

A trades hire performs one craft to a code and a schedule; a laborer supports crews. The Construction Technician is an owner-side or self-perform generalist who verifies, tests, documents and closes out work across crafts, and takes on small scopes the contractor is not mobilized for. ACI Field Grade I is a baseline where the technician runs concrete field tests, and a nuclear gauge license matters where compaction testing sits in-house rather than with the geotech.
