Hire Hardware Program Managers

Hire Hardware Program Managers who own cost, schedule and technical performance of a hardware product or contract from PDR through rate production — EVM and milestone reviews, DoD and prime customer interface, risk registers with burn-down, IPT leadership, and the transition-to-production plan that survives first-article. We verify the programs they ran, the CPI/SPI they delivered, and the customers who would take their call again.

How It Works

Hire Hardware Program Managers in 3 steps

A structured process for the hire that answers for the whole contract — where a Hardware Program Manager who cannot read a CPR, cannot hold an IPT to a baseline, or learns about a supplier slip from the customer is how a program eats its management reserve by CDR and gets a cure notice before LRIP.

Step 01

Talk to our team

30-minute call. Align on the hardware and phase (development, EMD, LRIP, rate production), contract type (FFP, CPFF, CPIF, OTA, SBIR Phase III), customer (DoD program office, prime, NASA, commercial), EVMS and reporting expectations, IPT size and functional split, clearance and ITAR requirements, and start date.

Step 02

Review hand-selected talent

Within 2 weeks we introduce 3–5 Hardware Program Managers with verified ownership of comparable programs — contract value, phase gates passed, CPI/SPI delivered, and customer reviews they stood in front of. References from program directors and the government or prime counterparts they reported to included.

Step 03

Hire with confidence

Every placement carries a replacement guarantee. If the hire fails within the warranty window, we run a no-fee replacement search.

Why iRecruit.co for Hardware Program Manager Hires

What makes our Hardware Program Manager shortlist different

A Hardware Program Manager at a defense-tech or space company is the one name the customer, the CFO, and the chief engineer all hold accountable for the same product. Generic PM recruiters screen for a PMP and the word “cross-functional”; we screen for baselines held, milestone reviews passed, and hardware that made it to rate.

01

Program ownership verified, not participation

Every candidate has documented ownership of a hardware program end to end — the contract value, the IMS they baselined, the SRR/PDR/CDR/TRR/PRR gates they passed, the estimate-at-complete they defended, and the variance explanations they signed. We confirm with the program director or the customer program manager who sat across the table, not just the resume.

02

EVM and customer-interface depth

Reference-verified EVMS fluency on ANSI/EIA-748-compliant programs: WBS and control accounts, CPR/IPMR submissions, CPI/SPI trends, MR and UB management, and IBRs and DCMA surveillance survived. Plus the customer side — PMRs, DoD 5000-series milestones, contract mods and REAs negotiated, and cure notices avoided or closed.

03

Transition-to-production experience

We match the candidate’s production history to your phase: development units to first article, LRIP to full rate, Class I/II changes and ECP management under configuration control, MRL assessments, production readiness reviews, supplier ramp on long-lead castings, ASICs, energetics, or composite structures, and the DFM/DFA push that gets unit cost inside the target.

Vetting Criteria

What we verify on every Hardware Program Manager candidate

Hardware Program Manager hires live and die on baseline control, customer credibility, and getting hardware to rate. Below is what every candidate has documented before you meet them:

Program ownership and phase gates

Verified end-to-end ownership of at least one hardware program — contract value and type, IMS baseline, and SRR/PDR/CDR/TRR/PRR gates passed — confirmed with the program director or customer PM.

EVM and cost performance

Reference-verified CPI/SPI history, EAC accuracy, MR management, and CPR/IPMR submissions on EVMS-compliant programs, including IBRs and DCMA surveillance outcomes.

Customer interface

Verified direct interface with a DoD program office, prime contractor, or NASA counterpart: PMRs led, contract mods and REAs negotiated, deliverables accepted, and the counterpart’s reference.

Risk, IPT and production transition

Documented risk register ownership with burn-down, IPT leadership across engineering, supply chain, manufacturing and test, ECP and configuration control, and a first-article or rate-production transition they ran.

Credentials verified

PMP, PgMP, or DAU/DAWIA certifications where claimed; engineering or technical degree; EVMS tool fluency (Deltek Cobra, MPM, OpenPlan, P6, MS Project); clearance level and ITAR eligibility where claimed — all checked.

Compensation alignment

Program Manager, Senior, and Director comp bands aligned before finalists are introduced, including equity, bonus, and relocation terms common at defense-tech and space employers.

FAQ

Hiring a Hardware Program Manager: frequently asked questions

How long does it take to hire a Hardware Program Manager?

Time to shortlist is typically 2 weeks from scoping call. Total time to placement (shortlist through offer acceptance) is typically 3–5 weeks. Seats that require an active Secret or TS/SCI clearance, ITAR eligibility, or relocation to a remote production site or test range can run a week or two longer.

What does a Hardware Program Manager cost in 2026?

Most US Hardware Program Managers at defense-tech and space companies land between $140K and $185K base depending on metro, program value, and clearance. Senior Program Managers and Directors of Programs owning $100M+ contracts or a portfolio typically run $185K–$250K, often with equity at venture-backed defense-tech companies and a 15–30% bonus at primes. These are market bands; we confirm live market bands during scoping. See our technical program manager salary guide for the adjacent market.

How is a Hardware Program Manager different from a Technical Program Manager?

A Technical Program Manager drives engineering execution — integrating design, software, and test workstreams against a technical plan — and usually reports into engineering. The Hardware Program Manager owns the contract: cost, schedule, and technical performance to the customer, EVM reporting, margin, and the production transition. On smaller defense-tech teams one person holds both; at primes and scaled space companies they are distinct seats and the HPM is the accountable name on the program.

How is a Hardware Program Manager different from a Manufacturing Program Manager?

A Manufacturing Program Manager owns the factory side of a product — production readiness, rate ramp, line capacity, and cost-per-unit on the floor. The Hardware Program Manager owns the whole program including development, qualification, and the customer, and hands the Manufacturing PM a baseline to execute. A generalist Program Manager spans sectors and rarely carries EVM or DoD milestone accountability.

Do we need a PMP or DAWIA certification?

Not as a hard requirement. A PMP is common and DAWIA Level II/III is a real signal for candidates coming from government program offices, but neither substitutes for a program they owned through a milestone review. We verify certifications where claimed and weight verified program outcomes above them. If your contract or customer requires a specific credential, we scope for it.

Do candidates need an active clearance?

We scope clearance level (Secret, TS, TS/SCI) and ITAR eligibility on the call and only introduce candidates who meet it. Clearable-but-not-cleared candidates are introduced only when you tell us the program can wait for adjudication. For OTA, SBIR, and commercial space work we confirm US-person status and export-control exposure instead.

What is your guarantee?

Every placement carries a replacement guarantee. If the hire leaves or is released within the warranty window, we run a replacement search at no additional fee. Warranty terms are set in the engagement agreement and depend on the hire path you choose.

Can you build a full program office, not just one PM?

Yes. For a new production line, a franchise program win, or a company standing up its first EVMS-compliant program office, we staff the whole layer — Program Managers, Control Account Managers, master schedulers, and Manufacturing PMs — through embedded recruiting support or an RPO engagement.
