300MW data center breaks ground in Pohang, South Korea

A 300MW data center project has broken ground in Pohang, South Korea, marking the start of a two-phase development in a city that is not a major data center hub.

The campus, named the Gwangmeyong General Industrial Complex, is planned for Ocheon, south of downtown Pohang. According to the original report, the project will be delivered in two stages: a first phase with 40MW of capacity and a second phase with 260MW.

The first phase is set to cover 100,000 sqm (1,076,390 sq ft). Local media reports said the goal is to complete that initial phase in H1 2027.

So far, around 2 trillion won ($1.35 billion) has been invested in the development, according to a report by KBS.

Hyundai Engineering and Construction is handling construction, while the site is being developed with investment from South Korean investor NeoAI Cloud. The original report did not identify any potential end-users for the facility.

Pohang is located on South Korea’s southeastern coast in Gyeongsang Province. While the city is not a major data center hub, it has also been linked to another large-scale project: SK ecoplant said in September 2023 that it was planning a new 120MW data center campus and landing station there, though the progress of that project remains unclear.
