Amazon has announced plans to invest a staggering $25 billion in its Mississippi data center operations, marking a transformative milestone for the state. The investment, which includes the creation of 2,000 high-skilled jobs, cements Mississippi's growing status as a technology and innovation hub.
Two years after breaking ground on its first data center campus in Madison County - a $3 billion investment that was the largest in state history at the time - Amazon has significantly expanded its footprint in Mississippi. The new commitment includes an additional $11 billion investment in Madison County and $1 billion to repurpose the former Delphi manufacturing plant in Hinds County into a state-of-the-art data center facility.
Governor Tate Reeves lauded the initiative, stating, "Amazon isn’t just reinvesting in Mississippi - the company is once again betting on our people. $25 billion in two years is providing Mississippians with high-tech, high-paying opportunities, strengthening our communities, and showing the world that our state is open for business. This is what transformational economic growth looks like, and it’s happening right here, right now. This is Mississippi’s time."
David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, emphasized the broader impact of the investment: "Amazon’s $25 billion investment in Mississippi to build data centers will create 2,000 high-skilled jobs and bring new energy generation to the grid. We’re covering all our energy expenses, increasing our investment in Madison County, expanding into Warren County, and transforming a former manufacturing plant in Hinds County - producing reliable infrastructure that will serve Mississippi for generations. Governor Reeves and local leaders have been outstanding partners, and we're just getting started."
The economic ripple effect of Amazon's operations in Mississippi has been significant. In Madison County alone, over 75 local companies have been involved in construction and operations, creating thousands of jobs in fields like construction, electrical work, and logistics.
Jeff Cox, president of Birdsong Construction, a family-run business in Clinton, Mississippi, highlighted the local impact: "It's brought in more work to this area than we've ever seen. We’re seeing transformational progress that's creating careers and building Mississippi's future."
Joey Deason, president and CEO of the Madison County Economic Development Authority, also acknowledged the broader implications for the state: "At the end of the day, this collaboration translates to increased paychecks, expanded small business opportunities, and a stronger tax base for generations."
Beyond economic contributions, Amazon has prioritized community development. The company has invested more than $12 million in Mississippi's local workforce and education system since 2024, benefiting thousands of students, educators, and workers. This includes grants for higher education programs in artificial intelligence, new training facilities, and resources for K-12 schools.
Amazon is also taking significant steps to ensure its data center operations support sustainability and bolster Mississippi's infrastructure. Collaborating with Entergy Mississippi, Amazon has fully funded energy upgrades for its facilities, which are part of Entergy’s $300 million "Superpower Mississippi" initiative. This initiative is expected to modernize the state's energy grid, resulting in a 50% improvement in grid reliability and a 50% reduction in power outages.
The company has also invested in renewable energy projects across the state, including solar and wind farms, which collectively provide 616 megawatts of carbon-free energy - enough to power 152,000 U.S. homes. Among these renewable projects is the Delta Wind farm, Mississippi’s first utility-scale wind farm that will generate consistent tax revenue for local communities.
In addition, Amazon is addressing water conservation through innovative cooling systems at its data centers. Operations in Canton will shift to using recycled wastewater for cooling by 2027, saving an average of 83 million gallons of water annually.
Amazon's investment has sparked a wave of optimism across the state. From creating thousands of jobs to modernizing local energy and water systems, the company’s commitment is reshaping Mississippi’s economy and infrastructure. As Governor Reeves stated, "This is Mississippi’s time."
