A $366 million data center campus in Cedar Creek appears to be moving forward after a September permitting roadblock, with state filings showing construction is expected to begin in late November.
Known as "Project Longhorn", the development is in talks with California-based Anthropic PBC, according to the Austin Business-Journal. Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that builds advanced large language models such as Claude.
The project is planned for Bastrop County, about 26 miles southeast of Austin, where multiple major data center projects and campuses are in the works.
A recent Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing places the campus’s first building at Earl Callahan Road near Walter Hoffman Road in Cedar Creek. Construction is slated to finish by the end of January 2028, according to the TDLR.
The filing describes a 498,165-square-foot, one-story building for a "Type II-B Construction Data Center" and business. The scope includes civil site work for structural and Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire (MEPF) trades on the new campus.
In September, "Project Longhorn" encountered a roadblock when Gov. Greg Abbott ordered a pause on new state permits for data center projects. The latest filing indicates the development now seems to be back in motion.
The project joins a growing concentration of data center development in Central Texas. Global data center provider EdgeConneX is currently building three campuses in the Cedar Creek area, with a total estimated construction cost of $5.84 billion.
More recently, EdgeConneX filed plans for two data center buildings totaling $1.2 billion at one of its planned sites at 6402 FM 535, Cedar Creek, TX 78602.
