Arevon Energy marked a construction milestone on September 16 at its Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City, California, where a 250 MW/1,000 MWh battery storage facility is under development and expected to begin commercial operations in 2027.
The event brought together state and local officials, California Public Utilities Commission representatives, project partners, labor and business leaders, and community members at a site that Arevon said will be able to power 321,000 homes for up to four hours during peak demand.
Construction on the project began in March 2026. Arevon is developing and operating Cormorant in partnership with Primoris Services Corporation.
The project was originally planned at 188 MW/752 MWh before being expanded to 250 MW/1,000 MWh. The added capacity is tied to a long-term offtake agreement with MCE, a community electricity provider serving more than 1.8 million residents and businesses across Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, and Solano counties.
More than $500,000 from that contract is set aside for local community programs, according to the source article.

Battery storage projects such as Cormorant are designed to store electricity during off-peak hours and discharge it when demand on the grid is higher. The project uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology, which the source article said has a strong safety record and a long operating life.
Over its lifetime, Cormorant is projected to avoid 191,800 U.S. tons of CO₂ annually and save more than 4.2 billion gallons of water. The project is also expected to generate more than $73 million in property tax revenue over its lifetime for local schools, infrastructure, and public services.
At peak construction, the project employs around 175 workers.
Arevon CEO Justin Johnson said the project addresses both electricity demand and reliability needs.

Daly City Mayor Glenn Sylvester said the project places the city in a broader infrastructure role, according to the source article.
MCE Acting CEO Vicken Kasarjian pointed to the community funding attached to the agreement.
"This project has a direct community benefit", he said.
The CPUC also connected projects like Cormorant to the state’s broader buildout of clean energy resources. Energy Division Director Molly Sterkel said the agency expects "more than 20 GW of new clean resources" to come online by 2032, with battery storage described as "a critical part of that effort".
The source article said Arevon has developed relationships with more than a dozen local organizations, including Bayshore Elementary School District, Jefferson Union High School District, Daly City Partnership, Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, Bayshore Community Center, Pacific Islands Together, and John’s Closet.
Mike Stancil, Executive Director of the Daly City Partnership, described Arevon as "a caring and compassionate corporate partner."
Cormorant remains on track for commercial operations in 2027 under its long-term agreement with MCE.
