GIC and Macquarie launch Theseus to support Anthropic data centers

Anthropic is teaming up with GIC and Macquarie Asset Management to create a new data center platform aimed at meeting the AI company's expanding infrastructure needs.

The three companies announced a strategic partnership to establish Theseus Infrastructure, which will develop, operate, and lease data center infrastructure to Anthropic under long-term agreements. The companies said, "each facility will be purpose-built to support Anthropic's growing capacity needs."

Theseus will focus first on the United States. Under the arrangement, the parties will work together to identify and develop new sites where Anthropic will serve as the anchor tenant. Further details were not shared.

GIC and funds managed by Macquarie will own Theseus and provide most of the equity for each project.

The new platform adds to Anthropic's broader data center build-out. The company said last year that it plans to spend $50 billion on data centers in the US. It also said it will build data centers with Fluidstack in Texas and New York, with more sites to come.

Anthropic is also known to be leasing capacity from TeraWulf, Hut 8, and SpaceX. In addition, the company has signed large-scale deals with cloud providers including Google, Amazon, Akamai, CoreWeave.

The company, which created Claude, is a major user of GPUs from Nvidia and AMD, as well as Google's TPU and Amazon's Trainium hardware. Last week, Anthropic also publicly confirmed that it has plans to design its own AI accelerator chips.

For the investors, Theseus adds to existing data center and digital infrastructure holdings.

Established by the Government of Singapore in 1981, GIC has investments in Vantage's EMEA data center platform, a number of Equinix's xScale hyperscale data centers globally, US firm EdgeCore, and holds a stake in Czech digital infrastructure firm CETIN Group. It recently invested in a Brazilian data center joint venture with Alianza Investimentos Imobiliários. GIC has also previously invested in Anthropic.

Macquarie Asset Management has invested in Netrality Data Centers and Applied Digital in the US, as well as Virtus in Europe. It previously had investments in APAC data center firm AirTrunk and US operator Aligned, though it has sold both in recent years.
