Microsoft has announced plans to acquire approximately 3,200 acres of land in Cheyenne, Wyoming, as part of a long-term strategy for a new data center project. The land comprises two parcels: a 200-acre site in the Bison Business Park along Wapiti Trail, east of S Greeley Highway, and an adjacent 3,000-acre area in Southeast Cheyenne. Both parcels are located southeast of downtown Cheyenne.
This acquisition marks the beginning of what Microsoft anticipates to be a "multiyear planning and development process." While details about the new data center have not yet been disclosed, the company has emphasized its commitment to expanding its presence in the region.
Microsoft first established its presence in Cheyenne in 2012 with an initial $122 million investment in a data center. Since then, the company has expanded its operations in the area multiple times. In 2014, the original site was expanded further, and in 2016, the West Central Azure region was opened. More recently, in 2021, Microsoft launched two additional data centers in Cheyenne, located in the Cheyenne Business Parkway and Bison Business Park.
In 2024, local officials voted to annex nearly 1,000 acres of land to expand the North Range Business Park in support of another Microsoft data center. This ongoing expansion highlights the company’s increasing footprint in the Wyoming area.
Cheyenne’s Mayor, Patrick Collins, highlighted the benefits of Microsoft’s continued investment in the area. "This is the latest in a long line of investments that Microsoft has brought to the city of Cheyenne as a member of our community since 2012", said Collins. "Microsoft recognizes the strength of our city’s workers, infrastructure, and economy. This expansion represents the next decade of opportunity and tax revenue that secures the quality of life that residents of our city enjoy."
Microsoft’s commitment to the community includes ensuring infrastructure upgrades and power requirements are fully funded through a partnership with Black Hills Energy. The company also aims to integrate more carbon-free energy into the state’s grid and has pledged to minimize water usage and replenish more water than consumed during operations. Additionally, the construction phase is expected to provide thousands of trade jobs in the region.
Wyoming, known for having a relatively small data center market, is seeing increasing interest from major technology companies. In addition to Microsoft, Meta has also established a presence in Cheyenne, while Prometheus Hyperscale and Crusoe are developing campuses in the area. Related Digital is working on a $1.2 billion data center project in Cheyenne, which will include 302 MW of capacity, with CoreWeave as the anchor tenant.
"Since the development of our first data center in 2012, Microsoft has been working to strengthen, not strain, the community of Cheyenne", said Bowen Wallace, corporate vice president of data centers-Americas Region at Microsoft. "We’re excited to continue our growth in the state, bringing more investment, opportunity, and tax revenue to the community we’ve been a part of for more than 14 years."
This new acquisition signals Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to both technological innovation and its partnership with the Cheyenne community, paving the way for continued growth in the region.
