X-energy has officially launched vertical construction of its TX-1 advanced nuclear fuel fabrication complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This groundbreaking project marks a significant step forward for the U.S. in its efforts to expand clean energy capabilities and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The TX-1 facility will play a key role in producing fuel for next-generation nuclear reactors, a development that is expected to bolster both energy security and decarbonization goals.

A milestone for nuclear energy innovation

The TX-1 complex is set to become the first facility in the United States designed specifically to manufacture fuel for modern small modular reactors (SMRs). Once completed, the 214,812-square-foot facility will supply advanced TRISO fuel for X-energy’s Xe-100 reactors, including a proposed four-unit plant being developed in partnership with Dow at its Seadrift, Texas, site. This achievement is being led by TRISO-X LLC, a subsidiary of X-energy, with construction support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP).

"The nuclear projects are always welcomed with open arms because they have the ability to kill two birds with one stone", noted the source material, emphasizing the dual benefits of addressing clean energy needs while strengthening U.S. energy independence.

Construction details and collaboration

After years of planning and groundwork, X-energy and TRISO-X transitioned to above-ground construction in November 2025. The complex is being built with a $48.2 million contract awarded to Clark Construction Group, which is responsible for the core and shell of the facility, including structural framing and industrial systems. This collaboration underscores the intricate planning and resources required for a project of this scale.

Significance for the clean energy landscape

The TX-1 nuclear fabrication complex isn’t just a milestone for X-energy - it’s a pivotal development for the energy industry as a whole. The facility aims to address the growing demand for SMRs in the U.S. and potentially abroad, aligning with the global push for cleaner, more efficient energy solutions. As the world seeks innovative ways to combat climate change, the advanced nuclear fuel produced at TX-1 could play a critical role in helping the U.S. meet its decarbonization targets.

Looking ahead

As X-energy moves forward with the TX-1 project, public anticipation remains high. The company has a strong reputation for delivering meticulously planned, groundbreaking projects, and this development is no exception. In addition to fueling its own Xe-100 reactors, the facility is expected to support multiple reactor projects across the U.S., potentially positioning X-energy as a key player in the global clean energy transition.

With construction underway, the TX-1 complex represents an important step toward a future where advanced nuclear energy technologies can play a central role in meeting the world’s energy demands sustainably and securely.
