We pulled BLS OEWS May 2025 medians and percentiles for aerospace engineers, cut them by aerospace manufacturing and six states, and layered employer-published base ranges from more than 90 propulsion, combustion devices, and turbomachinery reqs on six space-company job boards read on September 15, 2026.

How to read these numbers

A propulsion engineer salary search returns three kinds of numbers, and they disagree by more than the spread between a new graduate and a senior engineer. The federal spine is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics series 17-2011, aerospace engineers: 67,710 jobs and a May 2025 median of $134,960, with a distribution that runs $86,700 at the 10th percentile, $106,110 at the 25th, $169,690 at the 75th, and $205,890 at the 90th. There is no separate code for rocket engine, combustion devices, or turbomachinery work; a propulsion engineer with an aerospace degree lands in 17-2011, and one with a mechanical degree usually lands in 17-2141, mechanical engineers (median $104,110, $112,900 inside aerospace manufacturing, $124,400 inside engine and turbine manufacturing).

The industry and state cuts matter more than the national line. Inside aerospace product and parts manufacturing (NAICS 3364) the 17-2011 median is $137,030; the state medians that host engine programs run $158,370 in Washington, $157,620 in California, $156,190 in Colorado, $130,270 in Texas, $129,280 in Florida, and $127,540 in Alabama (BLS OEWS May 2025). The 75th percentile is where a senior propulsion engineer sits in that data: $193,060 in California, $181,460 in Washington, $180,310 in Colorado, $166,980 in Texas, $165,410 in Alabama, $156,370 in Florida.

On top of the federal spine we layered two kinds of posting data. Aggregators: ZipRecruiter puts a rocket propulsion engineer at $102,825 with an $82,500–$118,000 middle band and a rocket engineer at $101,752 (both September 15, 2026; ZipRecruiter publishes no page for the bare title); Indeed puts a propulsion engineer at $138,012 across 1,100 salaries from postings (updated September 7, 2026); Payscale, which samples self-reported pay, puts it at $99,853 across 108 profiles (June 14, 2026). Employer-published ranges: we read every req with propulsion, combustion devices, turbomachinery, or engine in the title on the public Greenhouse boards of a launch and satellite manufacturer, a launch vehicle and spacecraft manufacturer, a 3D-printed launch vehicle manufacturer, a reusable launch vehicle developer, a rocket engine and solid motor manufacturer, and a space station manufacturer on September 15, 2026, and cite them by employer type and state. Those ranges are base only, exclude equity, and come from pay-transparency states, which is why California, Washington, and Colorado dominate and Texas is blank.

What these figures are — and are not

Figures as of September 2026. These are public-market benchmarks, not iRecruit placement data and not an offer range. OEWS medians blend a first-year injector analyst with a twenty-year chief engineer inside one code and measure base pay only; employer-published ranges are the floor and ceiling of a level band, not a midpoint, and at space companies exclude equity that one board shows adding up to 30 percent on top of base; ZipRecruiter and Indeed averages measure what is advertised, not what is accepted. Read all of it as a frame for a compensation conversation, then price your own engine cycle, hardware ownership, level, and site.

Why the same title scatters by $100,000

Three splits explain most of the scatter. First, level architecture: a reusable launch vehicle developer publishes $151,305–$252,105 and $176,505–$327,810 on one senior propulsion engineer req, and a launch vehicle and spacecraft manufacturer publishes $115,200–$270,000 on one senior-or-principal req, so the same posting can be read as a $115,000 job or a $270,000 job depending on which level the hiring manager has in mind. Second, employer type: a rocket engine and solid motor manufacturer in Colorado tops its senior combustion devices band at $152,000 while a launch and satellite manufacturer in California tops its Level 3 at $215,000, a $63,000 ceiling gap for comparable hardware ownership. Third, disclosure: every employer range on this page comes from a pay-transparency state, and the same launch manufacturer publishes $100,000–$160,000 in Hawthorne and nothing for identical propulsion engineer reqs at Starbase or McGregor, Texas. The aggregator floor ($99,853 Payscale, $102,825 ZipRecruiter) is the general-industry propulsion seat, and nothing on the six boards published a California design-engineer ceiling below $123,000 (the lowest California ceiling of any kind was a $120,000–$122,000 propulsion test engineer I band in Mojave).

Aerospace manufacturing industry cut
BLS OEWS May 2025 puts aerospace engineers inside aerospace product and parts manufacturing at $137,030 against $134,960 nationally, a small premium because 3364 is already the largest employer of the series. The bigger industry effect shows in the mechanical series that many propulsion engineers are coded under: $104,110 nationally, $112,900 inside aerospace manufacturing, $124,400 inside engine and turbine manufacturing.

The stacking is the point. A propulsion engineer owning a combustion device at a launch company in California is competing against the $137,030 aerospace-manufacturing median and the $115,000–$160,000 Level 2 band, not the $102,825 ZipRecruiter average a generic req pulls. A senior stepping into a staff seat should expect the $164,000–$246,000 Long Beach band or the $151,305–$252,105 Kent band, and a propulsion test engineer moving from the stand to hardware ownership should read the test engineer salary ladder against this one before pricing the move.

Two patterns. First, employer bands are set by level and balance sheet more than by state: a 3D-printed launch manufacturer publishes near-identical ladders in Long Beach ($90,000–$198,000) and at Stennis ($90,000–$186,000), and a rocket engine manufacturer in Colorado publishes a senior band ($121,000–$152,000) that sits below a launch company’s Level 2 ceiling in a state whose median is only $1,430 lower. Second, the disclosure gap is structural: California, Washington, and Colorado account for every published propulsion band on the six boards, and a Texas, Florida, or Alabama candidate prices against the Hawthorne and Kent bands whether or not the req says so.

06 — Trend

What is moving the numbers

Engine programs have moved from development to production, and the reqs follow. Of the propulsion-titled reqs we read on September 15, 2026, a launch and satellite manufacturer alone carried more than 30 on its Raptor and Merlin programs in Hawthorne, most of them manufacturing-adjacent (chamber and nozzle, combustion devices manufacturing, components manufacturing, valves) and mostly priced a step below the design and flight seats: $100,000–$115,000 / $110,000–$135,000 or $100,000–$117,500 / $115,000–$140,000 for manufacturing, components, and valves reqs against $100,000–$130,000 / $115,000–$160,000 for Raptor flight and combustion devices. A 3D-printed launch manufacturer carried a full engineer I through principal ladder plus three managers; a reusable launch vehicle developer was hiring turbomachinery and engine test leads for a new engine; a rocket engine merchant was hiring across liquid engines and solid rocket motors at once. Volume production of engines is what turns a propulsion engineer salary from a research-lab number into a factory number.

The federal projection points the same way. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (modified August 27, 2026) projects aerospace engineers to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 5,700 jobs on a 2025 base of 68,700 with about 3,800 openings a year from growth and replacement. Reading the ladder before you write the req

Three rules follow. First, code the work, not the title: a propulsion engineer with an aerospace degree owning an injector belongs against the 17-2011 aerospace-manufacturing cut ($137,030) and the $115,000–$160,000 Level 2 band, one with a mechanical degree running fluid systems belongs against the mechanical cut ($112,900), and neither belongs against the $102,825 aggregator average. Second, state the level in the req: the boards that publish two or three bands get candidates who self-select, and a senior reading a single $115,200–$270,000 range will anchor on the top. Third, price equity and site explicitly: the one board that publishes both shows equity adding 10 to 30 percent to base, and a Texas or Florida engine site with no published range is still priced off California and Washington.
