What does an HVAC Engineer cost in 2026?

Most US HVAC Engineers on industrial and mission-critical programs land between $85K and $125K base at the EIT-to-Engineer level depending on metro and scope. Senior and Lead HVAC Engineers with a PE and data center, fab or gigafactory design history typically run $125K–$165K, with Principal and owner-side lead seats above that. How is an HVAC Engineer different from a Mechanical Engineer?

A Mechanical Engineer may cover HVAC, plumbing, process piping, fire protection or equipment design. The HVAC Engineer specializes in heating, cooling and ventilation systems — loads, hydronics, airside, controls sequences, energy. On industrial programs the titles overlap; we scope by which systems the hire will actually design or own.

How is an HVAC Engineer different from an HVAC Technician?

The HVAC Engineer designs, specifies and optimizes the systems. The HVAC Technician operates, maintains and repairs them hands-on. Owner-side facilities HVAC Engineers sit between the two — they inherit the plant, run optimization and retrofits, and work daily with the technician crew and an HVAC Supervisor.

Design-side or facilities-side: which do we need?

If the program is in design or construction and you need calculations, drawings, specs and sequences, hire the design seat. If the plant is built and you need someone to own energy, retrofits, capacity studies and commissioning close-out, hire the facilities seat. Owners standing up a new fab or gigafactory often need both in sequence; we can shortlist for either or scope a hire who bridges the handover.

Do you require a PE?

Depends on the seat. Engineer-of-record and stamping roles require a PE in the project state. Owner-side facilities and process-cooling seats often do not, and an EIT on the PE track with strong built-system history can be the better hire. We confirm the licensing requirement during scoping and verify PE and EIT status directly.

Do you offer a placement guarantee?
