01 — MethodologyHow to read these numbersAn hvac engineer salary has no federal code of its own. The BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program files HVAC, mechanical-systems and MEP mechanical engineers under 17-2141, mechanical engineers, a series covering 296,810 jobs in the May 2025 estimates released May 2026. That series is the spine of this guide: national median $104,110, mean $113,610, and a percentile ladder from $73,990 at the 10th to $164,340 at the 90th. The designer rung is read through 17-3013, mechanical drafters, and the lead and MEP-lead rung through 11-9041, architectural and engineering managers. Projections come from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025–35 edition. The industry cuts do the real work. OEWS publishes 17-2141 by NAICS industry, so we pulled architectural, engineering and related services (5413) and its engineering-services sub-industry (541330), plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (238220) and the parent building equipment contractors (2382), nonresidential building construction (2362), aerospace product and parts manufacturing (3364) and semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing (3344). BLS did not publish a mechanical-engineer estimate for computing infrastructure and data processing (5182) in May 2025, so data center cooling pay is read from posting data and labeled as such. All BLS figures were retrieved from the OEWS query system on September 15, 2026.Posting and self-reported data from ZipRecruiter, Salary.com, Glassdoor, Payscale, HVACJobsHQ and the KORE1 2026 mechanical engineer salary guide was retrieved September 15, 2026 and carries the date each publisher stamped on it. Licensure premiums come from NSPE and ASME salary surveys and the PSMJ 2026 compensation benchmark. Where sources disagree by $40,000 on the same title, and on the HVAC engineer title they do, we show the spread and say who says what. What these figures are — and are notFigures as of September 2026. These are public-market benchmarks, not iRecruit placement data and not an offer range. OEWS medians blend an HVAC design engineer at a 40-person MEP firm with a thermal engineer at a fab, measure base wages only and exclude bonus, overtime and per diem. Aggregator figures reflect what employers post and workers self-report, which is why the same title reads $77,665 on one site and $115,354 on another. Use it to frame a compensation conversation, then price your own environment, stamp requirement and travel load.02 — At a glanceThe benchmarks at a glanceThe whole guide in one screen. The employer type moves every rung: the same 17-2141 median is $91,760 at an HVAC contractor, $103,440 at an engineering firm, $112,900 at an aerospace manufacturer and $130,110 at a nonresidential building contractor, a $38,350 spread on federal data alone before any posting premium.
03 — BenchmarksPay bands by rung in 2026Six bands, each anchored to the federal series that best matches the rung and filled in with posting data where BLS does not split the title. KORE1’s 2026 guide brackets senior HVAC/MEP base at $102,000–$128,000 (May 22, 2026).$156,840-$171,270Lead and MEP lead, engineering-manager seriesBLS OEWS May 2025 median for 11-9041, architectural and engineering managers: $171,270 nationally, $168,410 at architectural and engineering firms, $166,970 in nonresidential building construction and $156,840 at building equipment contractors. Glassdoor’s senior MEP engineer total pay is $159,718 with a $128,270–$201,289 range (retrieved September 15, 2026); the 17-2141 90th percentile is $164,340.Sources: BLS OEWS May 2025 national, state and industry estimates for SOC 17-2141, 17-3013, 17-3027 and 11-9041 (OEWS query system, retrieved September 15, 2026); BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook 2025-35; ZipRecruiter national pages dated May-August 2026; Salary.com benchmarks dated May 1 and September 1, 2026; Payscale HVAC engineer page dated April 6, 2026; Glassdoor 2026 pay-trend pages; HVACJobsHQ posting index; KORE1 2026 mechanical engineer salary guide dated May 22, 2026; all aggregator data retrieved September 15, 2026.Why the same title pays $77,665 on one site and $115,354 on anotherThe aggregators are matching on strings, and the string “HVAC engineer” covers a two-year technologist doing load calcs at a sheet-metal contractor and a licensed PE stamping central plant drawings for a fab. Salary.com’s $77,665 and Payscale’s $75,295 skew to contractor and manufacturer postings; Glassdoor’s $115,354 is self-reported total pay skewed to consulting and tech respondents, with construction, repair and maintenance as its top industry at $103,843 median. Salary.com’s HVAC design engineer figure of $63,677 is lower than its HVAC engineer figure because the “design engineer” string catches non-degreed designers; ZipRecruiter’s $95,477 for the same title (August 2026) catches degreed engineers at MEP firms. The federal 17-2141 median of $104,110, built from employer payroll reporting on 296,810 jobs, is the stable reference; the HVAC-contractor cut of $91,760 explains most of the gap to the low aggregators. 04 — Cost driversWhat environment, license and tools add on top of baseOn this ladder the employer’s building type is worth more than the next promotion. A mechanical engineer who moves from an HVAC contractor to a nonresidential general contractor, an aerospace plant or a hyperscale cooling program changes the federal median by $15,000 to $38,000 before negotiation, and the PE stamp and modeling tools that unlock those seats carry premiums of their own.+$38,350Nonresidential building constructionBLS OEWS May 2025 puts the 17-2141 median in nonresidential building construction (2362) at $130,110, mean $128,320, against $91,760 at HVAC contractors and $104,110 nationally; the 75th percentile is $166,340 and the 90th $193,050. These are the mechanical engineers on the GC and design-build side of data center, fab and gigafactory jobs.+$8,790Aerospace and defense manufacturingThe 17-2141 median in aerospace product and parts manufacturing (3364) is $112,900 on 12,060 jobs, 25th $99,760 and 75th $149,430 (OEWS May 2025), the tightest and highest floor of any cut here. KORE1’s 2026 guide adds clearance premiums of 10–12% for Secret and 14–18% for Top Secret on cleared aerospace mechanical roles (May 22, 2026).+$3,130Semiconductor and cleanroomThe 17-2141 median in semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing (3344) is $107,240, mean $119,050, 90th $163,620 (OEWS May 2025). Posting data for the cleanroom-specific title runs higher: ZipRecruiter cleanroom engineer $101,752 with an $84,000–$116,500 band (September 2026), Glassdoor $115,421; KORE1 brackets semiconductor thermal and fluids engineers at $105,000–$130,000 mid and $135,000–$172,000 senior.$95K-$180KData center cooling and commissioningBLS published no 17-2141 estimate for computing infrastructure and hosting (5182) in May 2025, so this is posting data only: dcgeeks’ 2026 data center cooling guide brackets liquid cooling engineers at $95,000 entry, $128,000 mid and $165,000 senior, and commissioning engineers at $110,000 to $180,000; ZipRecruiter’s cooling engineer postings run $88,500–$136,000 (July 2026). Retrieved September 15, 2026.+$5K-$11KPE licenseASME’s 2018 salary and benefits survey put PE-licensed mechanical engineers at a $130,940 median against $120,000 unlicensed, roughly $11,000; NSPE’s membership survey reads a 20% gap; KORE1’s 2026 guide calls it about a $5,000 lift that becomes a requirement rather than a premium in stamping disciplines like HVAC. PSMJ’s 2026 benchmark, cited by ASME, puts professional-services mechanical engineers at $119,438 median at 10–14 years and $146,160 at 20-plus.$85K-$170KRevit MEP and energy modelingZipRecruiter’s MEP Revit postings span $85,000–$170,000 (March 2026) and HVAC MEP engineer postings average $39.45/hr (August 6, 2026). iRecruit’s MEP engineer salary guide (February 2026) reads BIM proficiency as a 15–30% band shift, $95,000–$120,000 against $75,000–$95,000 at mid-level, and energy modelers with 5–7 years at $140,000–$190,000 in data center and life-science work. The compounding is the point. An HVAC engineer at the $91,760 contractor median who moves to the owner or design-build side of a nonresidential project reaches the $130,110 median on federal data alone; add the PE stamp the seat requires and a cooling-commissioning scope on a hyperscale campus and the posting bands run $140,000 to $180,000. It is also why comparing an HVAC engineer offer from a sheet-metal contractor to one from a launch-site or fab owner by base alone is close to meaningless without the stamp requirement, travel load and modeling scope attached. 05 — VariationRegional and industry spreadHVAC engineering pay follows the buildings being built. California and Washington medians are set by aerospace, hyperscale and semiconductor employers; Arizona and Texas medians still reflect the pre-fab, pre-gigafactory economy even as TSMC, Intel, Samsung and Tesla campuses hire into them. State figures below are BLS OEWS May 2025 medians for 17-2141 unless another series is named; posting data is labeled.California and the Bay Area$130,900-$168,030California state median $130,900 on 30,530 jobs, the largest state count after Michigan, 75th $166,580, 90th $203,620; San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara $168,030 and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont $161,370 medians (OEWS May 2025). ZipRecruiter’s California HVAC design engineer average is $94,227 (September 2026).Washington and the Northwest$110,430State median $110,430 on 8,240 jobs, 75th $139,870, 90th $167,680, with a 1.22 location quotient set by Boeing, Blue Origin and the Puget Sound hyperscalers (OEWS May 2025). Mechanical engineers in aerospace manufacturing nationally median $112,900, the cut most Washington seats file under.Texas$112,410State median $112,410 on 22,080 jobs, 75th $145,090, 90th $175,210 (OEWS May 2025), a figure still weighted by Houston’s upstream oil and gas engineers rather than the Taylor fab or the Austin gigafactory. ZipRecruiter’s Houston HVAC design engineer average is $91,178 (September 2026).Virginia and the Data Center Alley corridor$104,180State median $104,180 on 7,470 jobs, 75th $131,250, 90th $160,770 (OEWS May 2025), within $70 of the national median despite Loudoun County hosting the largest data center cluster in the world; hyperscale cooling seats there are priced on posting data, with an Ashburn MEP engineer posting at $119,000 (December 2025, per iRecruit’s MEP salary guide).Arizona$100,270State median $100,270 on 5,050 jobs, mean $107,220, 75th $128,880, 90th $159,040 (OEWS May 2025), $3,840 under the national median. The TSMC Phoenix and Intel Ocotillo build-outs recruit mechanical and cleanroom HVAC engineers into a market whose federal median has not yet caught the semiconductor cut of $107,240.Consulting versus contractor versus GC$91,760-$130,110Same national series, three employers: $91,760 median at HVAC contractors (238220), $103,440 at architectural and engineering firms (5413), $130,110 in nonresidential building construction (2362), with 90th percentiles of $152,090, $166,550 and $193,050 respectively (OEWS May 2025). The spread is wider than any state-to-state gap except California. The geography that matters is inside the industry column. A Virginia HVAC engineer at the $104,180 state median and a Texas one at $112,410 are $8,000 apart; the same engineer moving from an HVAC contractor to the design-build GC on a fab is $38,350 apart on the federal medians, and the MEP and HVAC employers assembling cooling teams for gigafactories, launch sites and data centers price against the top of that column, not the state table. 06 — TrendWhere HVAC engineer pay is headingThe federal series is moving. The 17-2141 median rose from $102,320 in May 2024 to $104,110 in May 2025, a 1.7% step, while the 90th percentile moved from $161,240 to $164,340; the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook projects 11% growth for mechanical engineers over 2025–35, much faster than the all-occupation average, with about 17,800 openings a year on a base of 298,500 jobs. Posting data moved faster at the top: Glassdoor’s senior MEP engineer total pay of $159,718 sits between the 17-2141 75th and 90th percentiles ($132,590 and $164,340) on the national series. The demand is concentrated in the environments where cooling is the schedule risk. Liquid-cooled AI halls, cleanroom air handling for semiconductor and battery plants, and thermal management on launch and test sites all require licensed mechanical engineers who can stamp, model and commission, and the posting bands reflect it: liquid cooling engineers $95,000–$165,000 and commissioning engineers $110,000–$180,000 in 2026 (dcgeeks), against the $91,760 contractor median. The data center technician salary ladder tells the same story one rung down.Expect the divergence between BLS and posting data to persist. OEWS reports base wages on a May reference period, so 2026 offers on hyperscale and fab programs, and the per diem, sign-on and clearance components attached to them, will not appear in a federal median until the May 2026 estimates release in spring 2027. Read the federal number as the floor an employer can defend and the posting band as the price the market is clearing at this month. 07 — WorkforceWhat this means for hiring HVAC engineersFor employers, the practical read is that the HVAC engineer title is mispriced by the aggregators in both directions. An offer built on the $77,664 Salary.com figure will not clear a degreed engineer at an engineering firm, where the federal median is $103,440; an offer built on Glassdoor’s $114,031 overpays for a contractor design seat where the median is $91,760. Write the req against the industry cut that matches your employer type, then add the stamp requirement, the modeling scope and the travel load explicitly. Seats on nonresidential and mission-critical programs should be budgeted against the $130,110 median and the $166,340 75th, and a HVAC supervisor or mechanical superintendent hired alongside should be priced on the superintendent ladder, not this one.For candidates, the ladder rewards three moves: the PE stamp, the shift from contractor to consultant or GC, and a critical-environment specialty. The federal data prices the second move at $11,680 to $38,350 at the median; survey data prices the license at $5,000 to $11,000 and the posting bands price data center cooling and cleanroom scope at $20,000 to $60,000 over the contractor median. iRecruit is assembling candidate density across HVAC engineers, HVAC technicians and facilities engineers for data center, aerospace and defense and semiconductor and battery employers ahead of demand; the MEP careers and hiring guide covers the adjacent electrical and plumbing rungs. For the hiring side of this market, see the MEP & HVAC Recruiters practice. 08 — FAQFrequently asked questions What is the average HVAC engineer salary in 2026?+There is no federal HVAC engineer code; the BLS files the role under mechanical engineers (17-2141), where the OEWS May 2025 median is $104,110, the 25th percentile $84,130 and the 75th $132,590. Posting data for the literal title runs lower: ZipRecruiter $82,050 (September 15, 2026), Salary.com $77,664 (September 1, 2026), Payscale $75,295 (April 2026), all retrieved September 15, 2026. The gap is mostly employer mix: the 17-2141 median at HVAC contractors is $91,760.What does an HVAC design engineer earn?+It depends on whether the title means a designer or a degreed engineer. Salary.com’s HVAC design engineer benchmark is $63,677 (September 1, 2026) and the BLS mechanical-drafter median is $71,550, rising to $77,120 at engineering firms (OEWS May 2025); ZipRecruiter’s HVAC design engineer average is $95,477 with an $85,000–$100,000 middle band (August 2026) and Glassdoor’s is $111,592. Ask which one the req means before comparing offers. How much does a mechanical HVAC engineer make at a data center, fab or aerospace plant?+On BLS OEWS May 2025 industry cuts, mechanical engineers median $112,900 in aerospace product and parts manufacturing, $107,240 in semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing and $130,110 in nonresidential building construction, against $104,110 nationally. BLS published no mechanical-engineer estimate for computing infrastructure providers, data processing, web hosting and related services (5182) in May 2025; posting data brackets liquid cooling engineers at $95,000–$165,000 and commissioning engineers at $110,000–$180,000 (dcgeeks, 2026, retrieved September 15, 2026).Does a PE license raise HVAC engineer pay?+Yes, on every survey we found, though the size varies. ASME’s 2018 salary and benefits survey put PE-licensed mechanical engineers at a $130,940 median against $120,000 unlicensed; NSPE reads the gap at about 20%; KORE1’s 2026 guide calls it a $5,000 lift that becomes a hard requirement in stamping disciplines like HVAC. In practice the license matters most because it unlocks the consulting and GC seats where the federal median is $103,440 to $130,110 rather than $91,760.What do senior and lead HVAC engineers earn?+The senior band starts at the 17-2141 75th percentile of $132,590 nationally, $149,430 in aerospace and $166,340 in nonresidential construction (OEWS May 2025); posting data puts senior mechanical engineer MEP at $122,564 (ZipRecruiter, May 9, 2026) and senior mechanical HVAC engineer at $140,851 (Glassdoor). Lead and MEP-lead seats read through architectural and engineering managers (11-9041): $171,270 national median, $168,410 at engineering firms and $156,840 at building equipment contractors.
