Aerospace and Defense Supply Chain Salary 2026: Buyer to Director Pay

What is a real supply chain manager salary aerospace employers pay in 2026, and what do a buyer, sourcing engineer, or global supply manager earn at a launch, satellite, or defense-tech manufacturer? We pulled BLS OEWS May 2025 medians and percentiles for the four federal codes that hold supply chain work, cut them by aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing, and layered base ranges published on the public job boards of six space and defense manufacturers on September 15, 2026.

01 — Methodology

How to read these numbers

A supply chain manager salary aerospace search has to start with a coding problem: the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program has no aerospace supply chain series, and it splits the ladder across four codes. 11-3071, transportation, storage, and distribution managers (221,180 jobs, May 2025 median $107,230) is where O*NET files supply chain managers (11-3071.04). 11-3061, purchasing managers (84,320 jobs, median $148,080) holds the sourcing and procurement leader. 13-1020, buyers and purchasing agents (491,430 jobs, median $77,710) holds the buyer, and 13-1081, logisticians (251,040 jobs, median $82,320) holds the planner and materials seats. OEWS does not publish the detailed 13-1023 purchasing agent line separately; every buyer figure here is the 13-1020 group, diluted by retail and wholesale buyers.

The industry cuts are the useful part. Inside aerospace product and parts manufacturing (NAICS 3364), the 11-3071 median rises to $138,870, the 11-3061 median to $163,780, the 13-1020 median to $97,890, and the 13-1081 median to $101,510, all BLS OEWS May 2025. Aerospace employs 13,590 buyers and purchasing agents and 8,290 logisticians but only 2,540 purchasing managers and 1,200 distribution managers, so the manager cuts rest on small samples. Semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing (3344) prices the manager codes higher still at the top: $211,510 at the 75th percentile for 11-3071 against $169,250 in aerospace.

Federal series measure base pay and lag the market by about a year, so we layered two kinds of posting data. Aggregator figures from Salary.com, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter carry their retrieval dates inline. Employer-published base ranges were read from the public Greenhouse job boards of a launch and satellite manufacturer (WA, CA, TX, FL), a defense-tech manufacturer (CA, MA, AL), a launch vehicle manufacturer (CA, FL), a space systems manufacturer (CA), a satellite manufacturer (CA), and a space station manufacturer (CA) on September 15, 2026, cited by employer type and state rather than name. The construction-facing branch of the same ladder is priced in the strategic sourcing manager salary guide, and the figures shared between the two pages are identical.

What these figures are — and are not

Figures as of September 2026. These are public-market benchmarks, not iRecruit placement data and not an offer range. OEWS medians blend a first-year buyer with a twenty-year commodity leader inside one code and measure base pay only; employer-published ranges are the floor and ceiling of a level band, not a midpoint; Indeed and Salary.com figures measure what is advertised or modeled, not what is accepted. Treat all of it as a frame for a compensation conversation, then price your own category, site, and export-control requirement.

02 — At a glance

The benchmarks at a glance

The whole guide in one screen. Each row jumps to the full section.

Anchor numbers for 2026: the federal spine puts a buyer at $77,710, a distribution or supply chain manager at $107,230, a purchasing manager at $148,080, and a logistician at $82,320, all BLS OEWS May 2025 national medians, and the aerospace cuts lift each by $15,700 to $31,640. The employer-published ladder at a defense-tech manufacturer in California runs $99,000 at the floor of a buyer band to $220,000 at the ceiling of a senior global sourcing manager band and $292,000 at the ceiling of a director band. The aggregator figures for a generic supply chain manager ($108,076 to $130,314) sit on the 11-3071 national median, which makes that median a fair general-industry frame and a low one for a launch site or defense line.

03 — Benchmarks

The aerospace supply chain ladder by rung in 2026

Six rungs, buyer to director. The federal codes set the floor and the shape of each distribution; employer-published ranges from space and defense manufacturers fill in the titles BLS does not code, sourcing engineer and global supply manager above all. Where OEWS publishes a cut for aerospace (3364), semiconductor (3344), or motor vehicle (3361) manufacturing, it is shown against the national median.

$77,710
Buyer, national median
BLS OEWS May 2025 median for the 13-1020 buyers and purchasing agents group (491,430 jobs): 25th $60,800, 75th $100,820, 90th $128,870. Aerospace cut $97,890 across 13,590 jobs, with a $79,320–$121,790 middle band; semiconductor $78,230; motor vehicle $83,360. Posting data: Indeed buyer average $72,017 (Sep 6, 2026), Salary.com Buyer II $74,260 (Sep 1, 2026). Employer bands read September 15, 2026, all California: buyer $99,000–$130,000 with two to three years at a defense-tech manufacturer; buyer $73,964–$105,051 and Buyer II $88,810–$152,940 at a space station manufacturer; sourcing specialist II $72,000–$90,000 at a space systems manufacturer.
$111,000–$152,000
Senior buyer, employer bands
Senior buyer $111,000–$147,000 with four years at a defense-tech manufacturer in California, rising to $129,000–$171,000 for the commercial hardware and connected warfare categories; senior buyer $107,000–$152,000 and senior buyer, machining $105,000–$150,000 at a space station manufacturer in California (all retrieved September 15, 2026). These bands sit at or above the 13-1020 aerospace 75th percentile of $121,790 and the national 90th of $128,870, which is the cleanest evidence that the buyer code understates a hardware buyer at a space or defense manufacturer.
$129,000–$171,000
Sourcing engineer / supplier development engineer
No federal series exists for the seat. Employer bands retrieved September 15, 2026: product sourcing engineer $129,000–$171,000 with three to five years and a technical degree, senior and lead $146,000–$194,000 with six to eight years, at a defense-tech manufacturer in California and Massachusetts; supplier development engineer Level 1 $100,000–$115,000 and Level 2 $110,000–$135,000 in Washington, up to $115,000–$160,000 for PCB/PCBA in California, and senior $135,000–$190,000 at a launch and satellite manufacturer. The nearest federal frame is the aerospace mechanical engineer median of $112,900 (17-2141 in 3364, BLS OEWS May 2025).
$135,000–$185,000
Global supply manager (GSM)
Employer-provided base ranges retrieved September 15, 2026: global sourcing manager $135,000–$185,000 and GSM Level 3 $135,000–$200,000 at a launch and satellite manufacturer in California, with Washington GSM bands from $130,000–$180,000 to $135,000–$205,000; GSM $116,400–$174,600 with five to eight years at a launch vehicle manufacturer in California and Florida; global sourcing manager $146,000–$194,000 at a defense-tech manufacturer in California; senior GSM II $110,000–$160,000 at a space systems manufacturer in California. ZipRecruiter’s $79,183 average for the title (Sep 15, 2026) reflects distributor reqs, not these seats.
$107,230
Supply chain manager, national median
BLS OEWS May 2025 median for 11-3071 (221,180 jobs): 10th $65,120, 25th $82,440, 75th $146,770, 90th $194,900, mean $121,600. Industry cuts: aerospace 3364 $138,870 (25th $116,130, 75th $169,250, 90th $210,190), semiconductor 3344 $148,380 (75th $211,510, 90th $250,960), motor vehicle 3361 $147,200, data processing and hosting 5182 $124,870. Posting data: Salary.com $130,314 with a $116,848–$142,942 middle band (Sep 1, 2026); Indeed $108,076 (Sep 6, 2026). Employer: supply chain manager $110,000–$165,000 at a satellite manufacturer in California; data center compute supply chain manager $155,000–$215,000 with eight years at a launch and satellite manufacturer in California.
$212,868
Director of supply chain
Salary.com modeled median for a supply chain director (Sep 1, 2026), middle band $195,107–$231,016, 90th $247,539; Indeed’s director of supply chain average is $163,213 (Sep 6, 2026). Employer benchmarks retrieved September 15, 2026: director of strategic supply chain $220,000–$292,000 with ten years and senior director $292,000–$386,000 at a defense-tech manufacturer in California; senior manager, indirect procurement $190,000–$285,000 at a launch vehicle manufacturer in Florida; senior manager, supply chain $185,000–$260,000 at a launch and satellite manufacturer in California.

Why the same title scatters by $80,000

Two forces. First, the codes measure work, not titles: “global supply manager” at a launch manufacturer is a six-year category owner priced at $135,000–$205,000, while the same words on a distributor req pull ZipRecruiter’s $79,183; “supply chain manager” is a $155,000–$215,000 data center compute seat in Palo Alto and a $108,076 Indeed average nationally. Second, the 11-3071 code is wide: it holds warehouse and fleet managers in trucking and wholesale, which is why its $107,230 national median trails the aerospace cut by $31,640 and why the 11-3061 purchasing manager code at $148,080 is often the better spine for a sourcing-heavy supply chain manager. The other split is disclosure law: nearly every range on this page comes from Washington, California, or Massachusetts, from a launch vehicle manufacturer that publishes in Florida voluntarily, or from the defense-tech manufacturer’s Huntsville reqs, so a Bastrop or Starbase offer gets priced off those bands and the state medians below.

04 — Cost drivers

Premiums that move an aerospace supply chain offer

Base rung is half the story. Industry, technical depth, category scarcity, clearance, people leadership, and state each carry a documented premium, and at a launch site or defense line they stack.

+30%
Aerospace industry cut on the manager code
BLS OEWS May 2025 puts 11-3071 inside aerospace product and parts manufacturing at a $138,870 median against $107,230 nationally, a $31,640 gap, and the 75th percentile at $169,250 against $146,770. The buyer code gains 26% ($97,890 vs $77,710) and the logistician code 23% ($101,510 vs $82,320) on the same cut, so the premium holds from the first rung up.
+$30K
Sourcing engineer over buyer at the same employer
A defense-tech manufacturer in California publishes $99,000–$130,000 for a buyer and $129,000–$171,000 for a product sourcing engineer with a technical degree and three to five years; the floor rises $30,000 and the ceiling $41,000 (postings retrieved September 15, 2026). The senior sourcing engineer band, $146,000–$194,000, matches the global sourcing manager band exactly, which is the market saying that a should-cost model is worth as much as a category.
+$56K
Semiconductor and custom silicon at the tail
11-3071 inside semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing (3344) shows a $250,960 90th percentile against $194,900 nationally and $210,190 in aerospace (BLS OEWS May 2025). The launch and satellite manufacturer’s custom silicon and semiconductor GSM in Washington sits at the top of its $135,000–$205,000 band structure, and its senior GSM for data center memory and storage in California publishes $175,000–$255,000, the highest global supply manager range on that board.
TS req.
Clearance and export-control status
No aggregator prices clearance for this ladder, but every one of the defense-tech manufacturer’s global sourcing manager and sourcing engineer reqs, from the $129,000–$171,000 product sourcing engineer to the $166,000–$220,000 senior GSM and the $146,000–$194,000 general senior GSM at ten years, asks for the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance, so the clearance is baked into the band rather than priced on top of it. Every launch, satellite, and defense posting we read required US-person status under ITAR; the aerospace industry cut is the closest published proxy for that premium.
+48%
People leadership over senior individual contributor
A launch vehicle manufacturer publishes $116,400–$174,600 for a global supply manager and $172,400–$258,600 for its manager of indirect procurement, with the senior manager seat at $190,000–$285,000 in Florida (retrieved September 15, 2026). At the defense-tech manufacturer the step from senior GSM ($166,000–$220,000) to director of strategic supply chain ($220,000–$292,000) is $54,000 at the floor and $72,000 at the ceiling.
+36%
Washington over Texas for the same code
BLS OEWS May 2025 state medians for 11-3071: Washington $136,500, Colorado $132,610, California $123,780, Alabama $118,320, Florida $101,570, Texas $100,700, Arizona $98,750. Texas and California hold the two largest headcounts (28,710 and 30,540), but Washington’s 75th percentile of $166,730 beats Texas’s $135,960 by $30,770, and the Redmond bands are the only published price for the same employer’s Bastrop and Starbase seats, which carry no range.

The stacking is the point. A sourcing engineer pricing composites, PCBAs, or machined structures for a cleared defense program in California is competing against the $146,000–$194,000 band, not the $115,057 Indeed average a generic engineer req pulls. A category owner stepping into a supply chain manager or strategic sourcing manager seat with a team should expect the $172,400 floor a launch vehicle manufacturer publishes for people leadership, not a step up from the $107,230 median. The construction-facing version of the same seats, buying switchgear, chillers, and structural packages for a fab or launch site, is benchmarked in the strategic sourcing manager salary guide.

05 — Variation

Regional spread across the launch, satellite, and defense map

Six markets where aerospace and defense supply chain seats concentrate. Each cell pairs BLS OEWS May 2025 state medians for transportation, storage, and distribution managers (11-3071), buyers and purchasing agents (13-1020), and logisticians (13-1081) with the employer-published ranges we read for that state on September 15, 2026.

Washington (Redmond, Woodinville, Seattle)
$85.1K–$136.5K
Supply chain manager code median $136,500 (25th $106,090, 75th $166,730, 90th $202,070) across 2,490 jobs; buyers and agents $85,130; logisticians $107,250, the highest state figure for logisticians in the country (BLS OEWS May 2025). The launch and satellite manufacturer’s Redmond and Woodinville reqs publish GSM $130,000–$180,000 to $135,000–$205,000, senior GSM $160,000–$210,000, and supplier development engineer $100,000–$135,000 across two levels.
California (Hawthorne, Long Beach, Costa Mesa, Bay Area)
$82.7K–$123.8K
Supply chain manager code median $123,780 (75th $166,100, 90th $208,420) across 30,540 jobs, the largest state headcount; buyers and agents $82,720; logisticians $92,890 (BLS OEWS May 2025). The densest disclosure market: defense-tech buyer $99,000–$130,000 through senior director $292,000–$386,000 in Costa Mesa; launch vehicle GSM $116,400–$174,600 through staff $172,400–$258,600 in Long Beach; launch and satellite manufacturer GSM $135,000–$200,000 in Hawthorne and $145,000–$215,000 in Palo Alto; satellite manufacturer supply chain manager $110,000–$165,000 in San Francisco.
Texas (Bastrop, Starbase, McGregor, Austin)
$75.5K–$100.7K
Supply chain manager code median $100,700 (25th $79,390, 75th $135,960, 90th $177,340) across 28,710 jobs; buyers and agents $76,050; logisticians $75,480 (BLS OEWS May 2025). Texas requires no pay disclosure, and the launch and satellite manufacturer’s Bastrop, Starbase, and Austin reqs for GSM, buyer, supplier development engineer, and data center compute supply chain manager publish no range; the identical Palo Alto req for that last seat publishes $155,000–$215,000.
Florida (Cape Canaveral, Space Coast)
$72.9K–$101.6K
Supply chain manager code median $101,570 (75th $149,310, 90th $173,950); buyers and agents $72,850; logisticians $76,410 (BLS OEWS May 2025). A launch vehicle manufacturer nonetheless publishes Florida ranges: $116,400–$174,600 for an indirect GSM with eight years and a government-site background check, and $190,000–$285,000 for its senior manager of indirect procurement. The launch and satellite manufacturer’s industrial gases GSM and launch-site supplier development engineer at the Cape publish no range.
Alabama and Colorado (Huntsville, Denver, Colorado Springs)
$98.5K–$132.6K
Colorado’s supply chain manager code median is $132,610 (75th $167,200), second only to Washington among these states, with buyers at $83,590 and logisticians at $96,090; Alabama’s is $118,320 with logisticians at $98,450, above California and Texas on the planner code (BLS OEWS May 2025). Both are defense-program states where the aerospace cut is the better frame; the defense-tech manufacturer’s Huntsville product sourcing engineer reqs publish multi-level bands of $110,000–$190,000 at the entry title and $126,000–$190,000 at senior, floors that sit below the $129,000 and $146,000 its Costa Mesa equivalents publish.
Arizona (Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler)
$75.3K–$98.8K
Supply chain manager code median $98,750 (25th $81,650, 75th $129,680, 90th $166,680) across 3,390 jobs, the lowest of these six states; buyers and agents $75,340; logisticians $77,620 (BLS OEWS May 2025). For a semiconductor or missile-program seat the industry cuts matter more than the state line: 11-3071 inside semiconductor manufacturing shows a $148,380 median and a $211,510 75th percentile, and inside aerospace $138,870 and $169,250.

Two patterns. First, state medians spread the manager code by $37,750 from Washington to Arizona, wider than the $31,640 aerospace premium, so a state line and an industry cut can point in opposite directions for the same req. Second, the disclosure gap is structural: the same launch manufacturer publishes $155,000–$215,000 for a data center compute supply chain manager in Palo Alto and nothing in Austin for identical basic qualifications, so a Texas or Florida candidate prices against the California and Washington bands whether or not the req says so.

06 — Trend

What is moving the numbers

The ladder has grown a technical rung. On September 15, 2026 a single defense-tech manufacturer’s public board carried more product and supplier sourcing engineer seats than buyer seats, and the launch and satellite manufacturer listed supplier development engineers at eight sites against fulfillment buyers at four. These reqs ask for a BSME or BSEE, should-cost modeling, and supplier capacity and process audits, and they price at $129,000–$171,000 rising to $146,000–$194,000, a band the buyer code’s national 90th percentile of $128,870 does not reach. That is a supplier development engineer or manufacturing engineer profile with a commercial layer, and it is where the buyer-to-GSM ladder now bends.

The category mix is shifting toward scarce inputs. The same boards carried global sourcing manager seats for critical minerals and rare earth magnets, energetics and munitions, semiconductor chips and components, aircraft composites, and optics, and the defense-tech manufacturer prices every one of them at $166,000–$220,000 at the senior level; the space systems manufacturer opened a critical minerals senior GSM at $110,000–$160,000. The federal cut agrees with the direction: 11-3071 inside semiconductor manufacturing reaches $250,960 at the 90th percentile and inside motor vehicle manufacturing, the battery cell frame, a $147,200 median (BLS OEWS May 2025).

The projections are modest and the openings are not. O*NET’s Employment Projections summary (2024–2034) puts supply chain managers (11-3071.04) at 5 to 6 percent growth with about 18,500 openings a year, purchasing agents (13-1023) at 5 to 6 percent with 52,200, and logisticians (13-1081) at 7 percent or higher, much faster than average, with 26,400. The data center layer is compounding it: the launch and satellite manufacturer’s supply chain reqs for data center switches and optics publish $145,000–$215,000 for a Level 3 GSM, memory and storage $175,000–$255,000 for a senior GSM, and compute infrastructure $185,000–$260,000 for a senior manager, above every aerospace-only band on the same board, and BLS puts purchasing managers inside data processing and hosting (5182) at a $181,590 median.

07 — Workforce

Reading the ladder before you write the req

Three rules follow. First, pick the spine that matches the work: a supply chain manager who owns planning, logistics, and inventory belongs on 11-3071 and its aerospace cut of $138,870; one who owns category strategy and supplier contracts belongs on 11-3061 and its aerospace cut of $163,780, and the two differ by $24,910. Second, do not price a sourcing engineer off the buyer code: the employer bands start at $129,000 where the 13-1020 aerospace 75th percentile ends at $121,790. Third, price scope explicitly: aerospace industry, technical degree, scarce category, clearance, people leadership, and state each moved the published bands by $30,000 to $72,000, and they stack.

For employers, a Texas or Florida req with no range is still priced: a candidate for a Bastrop GSM or a Cape Canaveral supplier development engineer seat can read the Redmond or Hawthorne band for the same basic qualifications in thirty seconds. iRecruit is building candidate density across the aerospace supply chain ladder, from buyer through sourcing engineer, supply chain manager, and procurement manager, and screens for the should-cost, supplier audit, AS9100, and ITAR experience these reqs require. The aerospace and defense recruiters guide and the supply chain and procurement recruiters guide cover how to run the search, the aerospace and defense manufacturing sector page covers the environment, and embedded recruiting support covers filling a whole sourcing organization at once.
