01 — MethodologyHow to read these numbersThe EHS certifications in reindustrialization job reqs come from three issuing bodies. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) issues the CSP, ASP, CHST, OHST, SMP (renamed from SMS in March 2025), and STS; its Credentials At-A-Glance page (retrieved September 15, 2026) supplies eligibility and fees, and its 2024 Annual Report supplies credentials held at December 31, 2024, credentials awarded, and pass rates. The Board for Global EHS Credentialing (BGC), formerly ABIH, issues the CIH (fees from the BGC CIH Candidate Handbook fee table). IHMM, which absorbed ISHM, issues the CSHM.Pay comes from two sources that measure different things. The BCSP/NSC 2023 Safety Professional Salary Survey (9,600-plus respondents) reports self-reported base salary by credential; the 2018 BCSP/ASSE survey supplies the trend. BLS OEWS May 2025, pulled through the BLS public data API on September 15, 2026, supplies employer-reported medians and quartiles for occupational health and safety specialists (19-5011) and technicians (19-5012), nationally and inside aerospace (NAICS 3364), semiconductor (3344), motor vehicle (3361), and nonresidential building construction (2362). BLS suppresses the data-processing (5182) wage at 60 jobs and publishes nothing by credential.Posting data is labeled wherever it appears: Salary.com as of September 1, 2026, Payscale as of July 1, 2026, an Indeed count from August 6, 2026; scraped or self-reported, useful for direction, not for an offer. OSHA 10/30 cards and OSHA 510 and 500 are described from OSHA.gov pages read September 15, 2026; NEBOSH appears only as an aside. What these figures are — and are notFigures as of September 2026. These are issuing-body rules and public-market benchmarks, not iRecruit placement data and not an offer range. Survey medians are self-reported and skew toward BCSP’s own certificants; BLS medians blend every industry and seniority; posting averages match on job-title strings. Confirm fees against the issuing body before you reimburse an exam.02 — At a glanceThe benchmarks at a glanceThe whole guide in one screen. BCSP counted 25,290 CSPs and 12,008 CHSTs at end of 2024 among more than 65,000 active credentials. The BCSP/NSC 2023 survey median is $105,000, and a CSP adds more than $30,000 for a practitioner holding nothing else.
03 — BenchmarksThe six credentials employers actually write into reqsEach card gives the issuing body, the gate you must clear before the exam, what it costs to sit and renew, and what the letters signal on a resume. Fees are BCSP’s Credentials At-A-Glance, BGC’s CIH Candidate Handbook fee table, and IHMM’s fee schedule, all read September 15, 2026.CSPBCSP; bachelor’s degree, 4 years SH&E experience (at least 50% preventative, professional-level), plus a qualifying credential such as ASP, GSP, TSP, or CIH$160 application and $350 exam ($494 as BCSP’s application-plus-exam combo; $600 for the exam bundle with self-assessment and a retake); $180 annual renewal; 25 recertification points every five years. BCSP held 25,290 CSPs at December 31, 2024, awarded 2,413 that year, and passed 67.9% of 3,120 candidates. Signals a generalist who can own a site program and defend a risk register to a plant manager.ASPBCSP; bachelor’s in any field or a safety, health, or environment associate with 12 semester hours in the domain, plus 1 year of SH&E experience$160 application and $350 exam ($494 application-plus-exam combo; $600 exam bundle with self-assessment and a retake); $170 annual renewal; 25 points per five years, though most holders convert to CSP. 8,406 held at end of 2024, 2,189 awarded, 80.8% pass rate. Signals a degreed early-career professional on the four-year clock toward CSP.CHSTBCSP; 3 years of construction safety experience with at least 35% of duties requiring SH&E technical skill; no degree required$140 application and $300 exam ($426 application-plus-exam combo; $550 exam bundle); $145 annual renewal; 20 points per five years. 12,008 held at end of 2024, 1,656 awarded, 61.8% pass rate. The field credential for a site safety lead on a gigafactory or data center build, and the one general contractors name in subcontractor prequalification.OHSTBCSP; 3 years of experience with at least 35% of duties requiring technical skill in occupational hygiene or safety; no degree required$140 application and $300 exam ($426 application-plus-exam combo; $550 exam bundle); $145 renewal; 20 points per five years. Only 1,922 held at end of 2024, 133 awarded, 54.1% pass rate, the lowest of the four. Signals a technician who runs sampling, dosimetry, and exposure monitoring without a CIH on site every day.CIHBGC (formerly ABIH); bachelor’s or higher with 60 semester hours of science, math, or engineering, 180 academic or 240 contact hours of IH coursework, 2 hours of ethics, 48 months of professional IH practice, two references including a CIH$160 application, $370 exam, $180 annual fee ($90 partial year), maintenance on a five-year cycle. Signals the person who can defend an exposure assessment or a cleanroom chemical-hygiene plan to a regulator; it also substitutes for two years of experience in OSHA’s trainer prerequisites.CSHMIHMM (absorbed ISHM); safety-related bachelor’s plus 4 years, any bachelor’s plus 5 years, safety associate plus 6 years, or ASHM plus 2 years$185 application, $375 exam, $170 annual maintenance; recertification every five years on 200 CMPs, 100 earned from the job itself. Its blueprint weights business and financial management, so it signals a program manager who can build a budget; BCSP’s SMP, renamed from SMS in March 2025 (10 years of management experience, no degree, $170 renewal) competes for the same seat.Sources: BCSP Credentials At-A-Glance and CSP/ASP/CHST/OHST credential pages (retrieved September 15, 2026); BCSP 2024 Annual Report (credentials held as of December 31, 2024; exams October 2023 to September 2024); BGC CIH Candidate Handbook fee table and CIH public page; IHMM CSHM page and fee schedule (retrieved September 15, 2026); BLS OEWS May 2025 via the BLS public data API (19-5011, 19-5012; NAICS 3364, 3344, 3361, 2362, 5182); OSHA Outreach FAQ and trainer prerequisites (OSHA.gov).What is training, not certificationOSHA states that an Outreach card “is not considered a certification or license,” that 10- and 30-hour courses are voluntary unless a state or owner mandates them, and that trainers are “authorized (not certified)” (OSHA Outreach FAQ, read September 15, 2026). The trainer track is a prerequisite chain: OSHA 510 plus five years of construction safety experience unlocks OSHA 500; 511 plus five years unlocks 501. A safety degree, CSP, or CIH replaces two of those five years, the only place OSHA formally prices a credential. NEBOSH certificates are UK qualifications priced by providers at roughly £1,200–£2,500 for the International General Certificate (SmartQHSE 2026 guide); US employers rarely ask for them and BCSP does not list them as CSP-qualifying. Treat OSHA 30, HAZWOPER, and NFPA 70E as competencies to verify, not credentials to require. 04 — Cost driversWhat each credential is worth in pay and hiringOnly one survey measures pay by safety credential at scale, so it carries most of this section; posting data and BLS industry medians fill in around it. Every figure names its source and date.+$30KCSP premium over an uncredentialed practitionerThe BCSP/NSC 2023 Safety Professional Salary Survey (9,600-plus respondents) found the CSP “typically adds over $30,000” for a practitioner with no other credential, unchanged from the 2018 BCSP/ASSE survey. Forty-five percent of respondents held it, which is why it is the default line in manager reqs.+$18KAny recognized safety certification vs noneSame 2023 survey: holders of at least one credential (CSP, SMS, ASP, OHST, CHST, STS, CIH, CHMM among them) earned roughly $18,000 more than uncertified respondents on a $105,000 median. The 2018 survey put the gap near $20,000 on a $97,000 median.+9.8%CSP-titled postings vs generic safety managerSalary.com’s certified safety professional average was $109,822 on September 1, 2026 (25th–75th $103,475–$118,024) against $100,049 for safety manager ($90,474–$111,053) the same day. Posting data matched on title strings: a direction, not a premium you can bank.$98,000Payscale average base for CSP holdersPayscale’s CSP page reported a $98,000 average from 1,082 profiles as of July 1, 2026, with employer averages from $75,000 to $109,775 (Turner Construction). It sits below the BCSP survey median because Payscale profiles skew earlier-career.+$30KAerospace industry cut over the national medianBLS OEWS May 2025 puts specialists inside aerospace product and parts manufacturing (NAICS 3364) at a $120,130 median against $90,150 nationally; semiconductor (3344) $106,430, motor vehicle (3361) $102,890, nonresidential building construction (2362) $100,790. Industry, not credential, explains most of that gap.2 yrsExperience credit in OSHA trainer prerequisitesOSHA’s trainer rules let a CSP, CIH, or safety degree substitute for two of the five experience years required before OSHA 500 or 501. A CSP-holding manager can become an in-house Outreach trainer three years into a construction career instead of five.Stacked, the pattern holds: a credentialed professional sits $18,000 above an uncredentialed one, a CSP roughly $30,000 above, and posting averages for CSP-holders run $98,000–$109,822 against a BLS all-industry median of $90,150 (25th–75th $69,560–$111,690). The BLS number is the floor because it blends every specialist in the country; the survey number is the ceiling because it over-samples certificants. Price a CSP-required req between them, then add the industry cut. 05 — VariationWhich credential fits which environmentThe right credential depends on what the site does, what the owner or the government requires, and whether the role is a field seat or a program seat. Six environments cover most of the reindustrialization hiring iRecruit is building candidate networks for.Construction and mission-critical buildsCHST first, CSP to leadThe CHST’s three-year, no-degree gate fits site safety leads on gigafactory and data center builds, and general contractors write it into subcontractor prequalification. BLS OEWS May 2025 pays specialists in nonresidential building construction (NAICS 2362) a $100,790 median and technicians $70,040. CSP becomes required at the construction safety engineer or safety manager over a project team; construction certifications covers the trade cards.Manufacturing, battery and semiconductor plantsASP to CSP ladderA degreed EHS specialist enters on the ASP ($510 to sit, one year of experience) and converts to CSP after four; plant EHS manager reqs list CSP required or ASP with CSP in progress. BLS OEWS May 2025 specialist medians run $106,430 in semiconductor (3344) and $102,890 in motor vehicle manufacturing (3361), and BCSP’s 80.8% ASP pass rate makes the ladder a realistic plan to grow your own. Manufacturing recruiting covers the adjacent roles.Energetics, explosives and launch or test sitesCSP plus DoD/ATF trainingNo civilian credential covers explosives safety, so the CSP is the baseline and the specialist layer is regulatory: DoD 4145.26-M (the contractors’ ammunition and explosives safety manual) and DESR 6055.09; Defense Ammunition Center AMMO-45 (about 12 hours, satisfying certification and refresher requirements under DoDI 5160.68, AR 385-10, and DA PAM 385-64); and ATF employee-possessor clearance on Form 5400.28 within 30 days of hire under 27 CFR 555, with a manufacturer license at $200 for three years. The aerospace cut (NAICS 3364) pays specialists $120,130 and technicians $91,250; aerospace and defense manufacturing recruiting screens these seats.Data centers, operating and under constructionCHST on the build, CSP/ASP in operationsDuring construction the safety seat is CHST-eligible under the general contractor; once live, the program shifts to electrical safety and confined space, where an ASP or CSP with NFPA 70E training is the usual spec for a facilities operations manager or data center facilities technician lead. BLS counts only 60 specialists in data processing and hosting (NAICS 5182) and suppresses the wage, so price against the construction cut and the data center technician salary guide; data center construction recruiting covers the build.Laboratories, cleanrooms and GMP suitesCIH, with OHST supportExposure, ventilation, and respirator programs are the CIH’s domain; BGC’s 60 science hours, 180 IH hours, and 48 months of practice before the $370 exam are why the credential is scarce and why fabs and biologics plants pay for it. An OHST technician (three years, $440 to sit) runs routine sampling under a CIH; BLS pays semiconductor technicians (3344) a $76,410 median. An EHS engineer holding a CIH is the hardest of the six profiles to find.Multi-site and corporate programsCSP plus CSHM or SMPA safety director or EHS program manager over several plants needs the CSP for credibility and a management credential for the budget conversation: IHMM’s CSHM ($185 application, $375 exam, $170 a year) weights business and financial principles; BCSP’s SMP (formerly SMS) accepts ten years of management experience without a degree. The BCSP/NSC 2023 survey’s $105,000 median is the floor for this seat.Field seats are gated by experience-based technician credentials that need no degree (CHST, OHST), program seats by the degreed professional credentials (ASP, CSP, CIH), and regulated environments add government training that no board issues. Writing “CSP required” on a construction technician req prices out most of the 12,008 CHSTs for no gain; writing “OSHA 30 required” on a plant EHS manager req specifies no credential at all. 06 — TrendWhere the credential population is headingSupply is growing but skewed. BCSP reports active credentials passed 65,000 in 2024, more than double a decade earlier, with 11,537 awarded that year: 2,413 CSPs, 2,189 ASPs, 1,656 CHSTs, and only 133 OHSTs. The pathway designations feeding the CSP are large — 7,832 GSPs and 1,554 TSPs held at end of 2024 — so the CSP pipeline is now dominated by accredited safety-degree graduates rather than career-changers. Retention is high: 92.1% of CSPs due for recertification in 2024 met it.Demand is running ahead. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, read September 15, 2026, projects 19% growth for occupational health and safety specialists and technicians from 2025 to 2035, about 20,900 openings a year. Indeed returned 5,501 postings for the term CSP on August 6, 2026. The BCSP/NSC survey median rose from $98,000 in 2020 to $105,000 in 2023, with a 4% median raise. The scarce end is not moving. OHST passed 54.1% of just 229 candidates in 2024, and the CIH’s 48-month practice and 180-hour coursework gates cap new industrial hygienists regardless of demand from fabs and biologics sites. That argues for hiring the CSP or ASP generalist, contracting the CIH by the day until the exposure profile justifies a full-time seat, and building the OHST technician internally, since three years of experience is the only prerequisite. 07 — WorkforceWriting the credential line in the reqThree rules. First, separate required from preferred by seat: CHST or OHST required and CSP preferred for a field technician; ASP required with CSP inside a stated window for a plant specialist; CSP required and CIH or CSHM preferred for a manager or director. Second, price the line: a CSP-required req sits between the BLS median of $90,150 and the BCSP/NSC survey median of $105,000 before the industry cut, a CIH-required req above it. Third, verify: BCSP and BGC publish credential directories, and $145–$180 renewal fees mean lapsed credentials are common enough to check. The interview question that separates the bands is what the candidate personally owned: which program, which citation closed, which exposure assessment signed. iRecruit is building candidate density across EHS technicians, specialists, managers, and directors ahead of demand in construction, manufacturing, energetics, and data center environments, screening for the credential and the ownership behind it. For a standing pipeline rather than one search, embedded recruiting support and RPO are the models built for it.For the hiring side of this market, see the Manufacturing Recruiters practice. 08 — FAQFrequently asked questions What are the main EHS certifications and who issues them?+BCSP issues the CSP, ASP, CHST, OHST, SMP (formerly SMS), and STS; BGC (formerly ABIH) issues the CIH; IHMM issues the CSHM. BCSP counted 25,290 CSPs, 12,008 CHSTs, 8,406 ASPs, and 1,922 OHSTs at December 31, 2024. OSHA 10, 30, 510, and 500 are training, not certifications, by OSHA’s own definition. How much does the CSP certification cost and what does it require?+A $160 application plus a $350 exam ($494 as BCSP’s application-plus-exam combo; $600 for the exam bundle with self-assessment and a retake), then $180 a year and 25 recertification points every five years. Eligibility is a bachelor’s degree, four years of SH&E experience at least half preventative, and a qualifying credential such as the ASP or GSP. The 2024 pass rate was 67.9%.What is the difference between CHST and ASP certification?+The CHST is a construction technician credential: three years of construction safety experience, no degree, $440 to sit, $145 a year. The ASP is the professional step toward CSP: a bachelor’s or safety associate plus one year of experience, $510 to sit, $170 a year. BLS OEWS May 2025 pays nonresidential construction specialists a $100,790 median. How much more do certified safety professionals earn?+The BCSP/NSC 2023 survey found holders of at least one safety credential earned about $18,000 more than uncredentialed peers, and a CSP adds more than $30,000 for a practitioner with no other credential, on a $105,000 median. Salary.com showed $109,822 for certified safety professional against $100,049 for safety manager on September 1, 2026.What does a CIH certification require and cost?+BGC requires 60 semester hours of science, math, or engineering, 180 academic or 240 contact hours of IH coursework, two hours of ethics, and 48 months of professional IH practice with two references including a CIH. Fees are $160 to apply, $370 for the exam, and $180 a year.
