01 — Methodology

How to read these numbers

A process engineer salary has no federal code of its own. The BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program files process engineers under the discipline they were trained in: 17-2041, chemical engineers, for the plant, fab and materials process seats, 17-2141, mechanical engineers, for the machinery and automation process seats, and 17-2112, industrial engineers, for the manufacturing process and yield seats. The May 2025 estimates, released May 2026, put the three national medians at $125,040, $104,110 and $102,440, with 17-2041 running from $79,420 at the 10th percentile to $182,880 at the 90th on 21,070 jobs. Those three series are the spine of this guide; the manager rung is read through 11-9041, architectural and engineering managers.

The industry cuts do the real work. OEWS publishes each series by NAICS industry, so we pulled semiconductor and other electronic component manufacturing (3344), other electrical equipment and component manufacturing (3359), the cut lithium-ion cell plants file under, aerospace product and parts manufacturing (3364), pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing (3254), plus chemical manufacturing (3250), petroleum and coal products (3241), motor vehicle manufacturing (3361) and architectural and engineering services (5413) as controls. State and metro figures are BLS OEWS May 2025 for the same series, retrieved through the OEWS query system on September 15, 2026.

On top of the federal spine we layered posting and self-report data, each labeled with its date: ZipRecruiter national pages dated September 15, 2026, Indeed salary pages dated August 19–September 7, 2026, Salary.com benchmarks dated September 1, 2026 and Payscale profiles updated July 12–13, 2026. We then read the base pay ranges that a space launch manufacturer, a defense-tech manufacturer, a launch vehicle maker, a photonic chip fab and an advanced nuclear developer published on their Greenhouse job boards, all retrieved September 15, 2026, and cite them by employer type and state rather than by name. Where sources disagree we show the spread and say who says what.

What these figures are — and are not

Figures as of September 2026. These are public-market benchmarks, not iRecruit placement data and not an offer range. OEWS medians blend a chemical engineer at a refinery with a yield engineer at a fab, measure base wages only and exclude bonus, equity, shift differential and clearance pay. Aggregator figures reflect what employers post and workers self-report, which is why the same title reads $84,921 on one site and $98,575 on another. Use it to frame a compensation conversation, then price your own environment, discipline and level.

02 — At a glance

The benchmarks at a glance

The whole guide in one screen. Each row jumps to the full section.

Anchor numbers for 2026: the federal median for the chemical-engineer series most process engineers sit in is $125,040, the mechanical and industrial spines sit at $104,110 and $102,440, the Process Engineer I floor is $86,626 on Salary.com, the senior band reads $117,000–$135,000 across four aggregators, and the manager rung reads $142,709 posted and $171,270 on the federal manager series. The gap between the posted title and the federal spine, $92,018 against $125,040, is the single most important number on the page: aggregators match the string “process engineer,” which catches two-year technologists at food and plastics plants, while OEWS counts degreed chemical engineers at refineries, fabs and chemical plants.

03 — Benchmarks

Pay bands by rung in 2026

Six bands, each anchored to the federal series that best matches the rung and filled in with posting data where BLS does not split the title. The three discipline spines are shown separately because a process engineer hired on a chemical engineering degree, a mechanical degree or an industrial degree is benchmarked against a different federal median by every compensation team that uses OEWS.

$125,040
Chemical-engineer spine (BLS 17-2041)
BLS OEWS May 2025 national median for chemical engineers across 21,070 jobs: mean $129,980, 25th $97,820, 75th $157,190, 90th $182,880. This is the series plant, fab, chemical and materials process engineers file under, and the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook reports the same $125,040 as the 2025 median with about 1,100 openings a year on 21,900 jobs.
$104,110
Mechanical-engineer spine (BLS 17-2141)
BLS OEWS May 2025 national median for mechanical engineers across 296,810 jobs: 25th $84,130, 75th $132,590, 90th $164,340. Machinery, automation, tooling and thermal process engineers at launch sites, gigafactories and machine shops are read against this series, which is $20,930 below the chemical spine at the median.
$102,440
Industrial-engineer spine (BLS 17-2112)
BLS OEWS May 2025 national median for industrial engineers across 365,740 jobs: 25th $83,600, 75th $129,250, 90th $159,860. Manufacturing process, yield and continuous-improvement engineers at fabs and assembly plants are counted here; the 3344 semiconductor cut alone holds 20,060 industrial engineers against 500 chemical engineers, so most fab process engineers are in this series.
$84,921-$98,575
Process engineer, posted title
ZipRecruiter posts the title at $92,018 with a $74,500 25th, $103,000 75th and $125,000 90th (September 15, 2026); Indeed at $98,575 across 7,800 postings with a $65,667–$147,975 range (September 7, 2026); Payscale at $84,921 base across 5,405 profiles with $1,000–$13,000 bonus (July 13, 2026); Salary.com’s Process Engineer I benchmark is $86,626 (September 1, 2026). All retrieved September 15, 2026.
$116,743-$134,698
Senior process engineer, posted and self-reported
ZipRecruiter senior process engineer $121,116 with a $104,000 25th, $134,500 75th and $156,000 90th (September 15, 2026); Indeed $117,472 across 2,200 postings, $81,465–$169,394 (September 7, 2026); Payscale $116,743 base, 10th $92,000, 90th $152,000, bonus $3,000–$17,000 across 962 profiles (July 12, 2026); Salary.com Process Engineer IV, 7+ years, $134,698 (September 1, 2026). All retrieved September 15, 2026.
$142,709-$171,270
Process engineering manager
Salary.com posts process engineering manager at $142,709 with a $134,756–$153,542 interquartile band and a $127,515–$163,405 10th–90th band, and process engineering supervisor at $117,502 (September 1, 2026). BLS 11-9041, architectural and engineering managers, medians $171,270 nationally, $183,950 in semiconductor 3344, $192,800 in aerospace 3364 and $165,520 in the 3359 battery cut (OEWS May 2025).

Why the same title pays $84,921 on one site and $125,040 on another

The aggregators are matching on strings, and the string “process engineer” covers a technologist tuning an extruder at a plastics plant and a PhD chemical engineer owning a deposition module at a fab. Payscale’s $84,921 and ZipRecruiter’s $92,018 skew to the plastics, food, fabricated-metal and contract-manufacturing postings that make up most of the title’s volume; the federal 17-2112 median in plastics product manufacturing is $96,620 and in fabricated metal $93,170, which is where those figures come from. Indeed’s $98,575 catches more Houston and New Jersey chemical and pharma postings and lands higher. The 17-2041 median of $125,040, built from employer payroll reports, counts only degreed chemical engineers, of whom 6,060 sit in chemical manufacturing at a $112,300 median and 1,020 in petroleum and coal products at $136,810. ZipRecruiter’s semiconductor process engineer page returns the identical $92,018 as its generic page, a sign it is not a separate sample, so we do not use it as a fab benchmark.

04 — Cost drivers

What environment, discipline and clearance add on top of base

On this ladder the employer’s process environment is worth more than the next promotion. A chemical engineer who moves from a plastics plant to a fab or a refinery changes the federal median by $28,000 to $36,000 before negotiation, and the posted ranges from space, defense-tech and photonics employers sit above every federal 75th percentile in the table.

+$3,490 to +$5,670
Cleanroom and fab
BLS OEWS May 2025 puts the 17-2041 median in semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing (3344) at $128,530, mean $132,010, 25th $102,320, 75th $159,510 and 90th $195,530, against $125,040 nationally; the 17-2112 industrial-engineer median in the same cut is $108,110 against $102,440, and engineers, all other (17-2199) reads $132,760 on 2,910 jobs. Salary.com’s posting scan for the literal title process engineer, semiconductor is $91,849 (September 1, 2026), which reads as the technician-adjacent end of the fab ladder.
$100,190-$106,290
Battery cell and gigafactory
The 3359 other electrical equipment and component manufacturing cut, where lithium-ion cell plants file, is a discount on federal data: 17-2041 median $100,190 on 120 jobs, 17-2141 $106,290 on 3,220 jobs and 17-2112 $98,920 on 5,400 jobs (OEWS May 2025). The motor vehicle manufacturing cut (3361) that the vertically integrated EV makers report into is higher, with a $121,670 mechanical median and $106,340 industrial median, so a cell-plant process engineer should be priced against 3361 rather than 3359 when the owner is an automaker.
+$8,790 / +$4,730
Aerospace, propulsion and space
The 17-2141 median in aerospace product and parts manufacturing (3364) is $112,900 on 12,060 jobs, 75th $149,430, and the 17-2112 median is $107,170 on 25,680 jobs, 75th $131,930 (OEWS May 2025). Posted ranges run well above that: a California space launch manufacturer publishes Level 1 $100,000–$130,000, Level 2 $115,000–$160,000 and Level 3 $135,000–$215,000 for process engineers, and a launch vehicle maker in Long Beach publishes $132,000–$198,000 for a senior heat-treat process engineer (retrieved September 15, 2026).
+10% / up to $20,000
Clearance and defense-tech
The same space manufacturer states that cleared employees receive a 10% differential up to $20,000 a year once briefed into a classified program. A defense-tech manufacturer posts $146,000–$194,000 base for a process engineer in Santa Ana, California and for senior materials and process engineers on rocket motor systems in Huntsville, Alabama, with $113,000–$149,000 for the same title in McHenry, Mississippi and $166,000–$220,000 for a product development process engineer in Costa Mesa (all retrieved September 15, 2026).
+$11,770
Refining, chemicals and energy
The traditional chemical-engineer home still pays the highest federal medians: 17-2041 reads $136,810 in petroleum and coal products manufacturing (3241), 75th $173,580, and $147,960 in machinery manufacturing (3330), against $112,300 in chemical manufacturing broadly (OEWS May 2025). Glassdoor’s top-paying industry for the title is energy, mining and utilities at $124,222 median total pay (retrieved September 15, 2026).
-$18,900
Pharma, GMP and cleanroom biologics
The pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing cut (3254) reads $106,140 for chemical engineers on 1,150 jobs, 25th $96,400, 75th $122,040, and $104,110 for industrial engineers on 11,710 jobs (OEWS May 2025). GMP validation experience transfers directly to cleanroom fab and battery dry-room seats, which is why fab employers in Arizona and Texas source from pharma when the local chemical-engineer pool is thin.

The compounding is the point. A process engineer at the $92,018 posted average who moves to a fab or refinery reaches the $125,040 to $136,810 federal medians on discipline and industry alone; add a senior level at a space or defense-tech employer and the posted bands run $135,000 to $215,000 before the clearance differential. It is also why comparing a process engineer offer from a plastics converter to one from a launch site or a fab by base alone is close to meaningless without the discipline, cleanroom scope and clearance requirement attached.

05 — Variation

Regional and industry spread

Process engineering pay follows the plants being built. Texas and Louisiana medians are set by refineries and chemical complexes; California, Washington and Oregon by fabs, launch manufacturers and hyperscale supply chains; Arizona and Ohio still reflect the pre-fab economy even as TSMC, Intel and the battery joint ventures hire into them. State and metro figures below are BLS OEWS May 2025 medians for the series named; posting data is labeled.

Texas and the Gulf Coast
$132,750-$138,120
Texas 17-2041 median $132,750 on 2,610 jobs, the largest state count published, 75th $167,750, 90th $210,460; Houston $138,120 on 1,510 jobs, 75th $178,720; Austin $129,790; mechanical engineers $112,410 statewide and $125,350 in Houston (OEWS May 2025). Indeed’s Austin process engineer average is $107,989 across 64 postings (September 6, 2026); Louisiana chemical engineers median $134,800.
California and the Bay Area
$123,900-$168,030
California 17-2041 employment is 2,190 but the state median is suppressed; Los Angeles reads $134,210 for chemical engineers, $123,900 for mechanical engineers; San Jose reads $168,030 for mechanical engineers and $136,950 for industrial engineers, 75th $171,880 (OEWS May 2025). Employer postings retrieved September 15, 2026 run $100,000–$215,000 by level at a space launch manufacturer and $105,500–$177,200 by zone at a photonic fab; Indeed senior process engineer in Santa Clara $137,858.
Arizona and Phoenix
$100,980-$109,020
Arizona reports only 80 chemical engineers and suppresses the median; the fab process workforce files as industrial engineers at $108,280 statewide on 7,520 jobs, 75th $135,150, 90th $170,800, and $109,020 in Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler on 5,810 jobs; mechanical engineers $100,270 statewide and $100,980 in Phoenix (OEWS May 2025). Indeed puts the Phoenix process engineer average at $95,510 across 69 postings (September 4, 2026) and the senior title at $127,935 (August 19, 2026).
Washington and Oregon
$125,200-$131,690
Washington 17-2041 median $128,290 on 650 jobs, 75th $164,630; industrial engineers $129,050 statewide and $131,210 in Seattle; Oregon industrial engineers $128,290 on 5,810 jobs, 75th $165,780, 90th $198,960, and $129,890 in Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro where chemical engineers median $131,690 (OEWS May 2025). ZipRecruiter’s Washington page posts the title at $104,219 (September 15, 2026); a Redmond microelectronics process engineer posting reads $105,000–$150,000 across two levels.
Ohio, Michigan and the Midwest
$99,100-$113,160
Ohio chemical engineers $111,200 on 1,030 jobs, 75th $135,700, Columbus $110,860; industrial engineers $100,060 on 23,480 jobs and mechanical engineers $99,100 on 14,390; Michigan mechanical engineers $104,890 on 34,630 jobs, the largest state count, industrial $101,680; Indiana chemical engineers $113,160; Detroit industrial engineers $104,110 (OEWS May 2025). The Intel Ohio and battery joint-venture plants are hiring into these medians, not above them, on federal data.
Southeast, Mountain West and New Mexico
$103,880-$158,190
Georgia chemical engineers $103,880 and industrial $100,100; North Carolina chemical $117,410; Tennessee chemical median suppressed on 480 jobs, industrial $99,080; Idaho chemical $106,740 on 140 jobs with a $168,680 75th, Boise industrial $100,840; Nevada industrial $102,090, Reno $103,060; New Mexico chemical $158,190 and mechanical $157,710, the highest state medians in the set, driven by national-laboratory employers (OEWS May 2025). Defense-tech postings in Huntsville read $146,000–$194,000 and in Mississippi $113,000–$149,000.

The geography that matters is inside the industry column. An Ohio chemical engineer at the $111,200 state median and a Texas one at $132,750 are $21,550 apart; the same engineer moving from a plastics plant to a refinery is $36,610 apart on the federal industry medians, and the manufacturing and aerospace and defense employers standing up fabs, cell plants and launch sites price against the top of that column, not the state table.

06 — Trend

Where process engineer pay is heading

The federal projections point up on every spine. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook projects 5% growth for chemical engineers over 2025–35 with about 1,100 openings a year on 21,900 jobs, 12% for industrial engineers with about 23,100 openings a year on 365,100 jobs, and 11% for mechanical engineers, all faster than the all-occupation average. The process engineer title draws from all three, and the industrial-engineer series, where most fab and assembly process engineers are counted, is the fastest-growing engineering occupation the handbook tracks.

The demand is concentrated in the environments where process yield is the schedule risk. Fabs in Arizona, Ohio, Texas, Idaho and New York, cell plants across the Southeast and Midwest, and propulsion and satellite production lines in California, Texas, Washington and Alabama all need process engineers who can bring a module from qualification to rate, and the posted ranges those employers publish, $100,000–$130,000 at Level 1 and $135,000–$215,000 at Level 3 on the space launch board, sit at or above the federal 75th percentiles for the series. Advanced nuclear is the newest bidder: a Santa Clara developer posts $80,000–$155,000 for a generalist process engineer, $100,000–$160,000 for fuel recycling and $130,000–$200,000 for isotope process engineers (retrieved September 15, 2026).

The posting data is drifting toward the federal spine. ZipRecruiter’s senior process engineer average of $121,116 now sits within $4,000 of the 17-2041 national median, and Indeed’s senior figure of $117,472 clears the 17-2141 75th percentile of $132,590 in its top metros, Santa Clara at $137,858 and San Diego at $134,108. Expect the entry rung to move next: employers in Arizona and Texas that cannot find degreed chemical engineers locally, where the state counts are 80 and 2,610, are already posting mechanical and industrial process seats at chemical-engineer money.

07 — Workforce

What this means for hiring process engineers

For employers, the practical read is that the process engineer title is mispriced by the aggregators in both directions. An offer built on the $84,921 Payscale figure will not clear a degreed chemical engineer at a fab or refinery, where the federal medians are $128,530 and $136,810; an offer built on the $125,040 national chemical-engineer median overpays for a manufacturing process seat at a plastics or fabricated-metal plant where the industrial-engineer median is $93,170 to $96,620. Write the req against the discipline and industry cut that match your plant, state the level explicitly, and budget cleanroom, propulsion and cleared seats against the posted employer ranges rather than the federal table. Hiring a manufacturing engineer, industrial engineer or quality engineer alongside should be priced on the 17-2112 series, not the chemical spine.

For candidates, the leverage is in the environment column. A process engineer at the $92,018 posted average with GMP, cleanroom or dry-room experience is a candidate for fab, cell-plant and satellite-production seats posting $115,000–$160,000 at Level 2, and a senior with module ownership and clearance eligibility is a candidate for the $146,000–$194,000 defense-tech bands. iRecruit is building candidate density across the process engineering ladder for reindustrialization manufacturers, from Process Engineer I through process engineering manager, so employers standing up a new line can shortlist against the environment, not the string.

08 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the average process engineer salary in 2026?+
There is no federal process engineer code; the BLS files the role under chemical engineers (17-2041), where the OEWS May 2025 median is $125,040, the 25th percentile $97,820 and the 75th $157,190, or under mechanical (17-2141, $104,110) and industrial (17-2112, $102,440) engineers depending on the seat. Posting data for the literal title runs lower: ZipRecruiter $92,018 and Indeed $98,575 (September 2026), Payscale $84,921 (July 2026), all retrieved September 15, 2026. The gap is mostly employer mix.
How much does a semiconductor process engineer make?+
BLS OEWS May 2025 puts chemical engineers in semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing (3344) at a $128,530 median with a $159,510 75th and $195,530 90th percentile, industrial engineers in the same cut at $108,110 and engineers, all other at $132,760. Phoenix industrial engineers median $109,020 and San Jose $136,950. A photonic chip fab in Milpitas posts $150,800–$177,200 for a Bay Area fiber assembly process engineer and $176,500–$207,400 for a process engineering manager (retrieved September 15, 2026).
What does a senior process engineer earn?+
Four aggregators cluster the senior title between $116,743 (Payscale, July 12, 2026) and $121,116 (ZipRecruiter, September 15, 2026), with Indeed at $117,472 and Salary.com’s Process Engineer IV at $134,698. Employer-posted ranges sit higher: a space launch manufacturer publishes $135,000–$215,000 for Level 3 in California and a defense-tech manufacturer $146,000–$194,000 for senior materials and process engineers in California and Alabama (retrieved September 15, 2026).
Do process engineers at battery plants earn more than at other plants?+
Not on federal data. The 3359 other electrical equipment and component manufacturing cut, where cell plants file, reads $100,190 for chemical engineers, $106,290 for mechanical engineers and $98,920 for industrial engineers (OEWS May 2025), all at or below the national medians. The motor vehicle manufacturing cut (3361) that automaker-owned cell plants report into is higher at $121,670 for mechanical engineers, and posted gigafactory seats in Texas and Nevada follow the automaker’s band, not the 3359 median.
What is the process engineer salary by state?+
BLS OEWS May 2025 chemical-engineer medians: Texas $132,750, Washington $128,290, New York $129,060, North Carolina $117,410, Ohio $111,200, Georgia $103,880, with Houston at $138,120 and Los Angeles at $134,210; New Mexico is the outlier at $158,190. Arizona and California suppress the chemical-engineer median, so use industrial engineers there: Arizona $108,280, California $124,600, San Jose $136,950. Indeed posts Austin at $107,989 and Phoenix at $95,510 for the literal title (September 2026).
