Cologix, a prominent U.S. data center firm, has announced its acquisition of 38 acres of land in Ashburn, Virginia. This new development marks a significant expansion for the company as it looks to bolster its presence in the area famously known as "Data Center Alley."

The newly acquired land in Loudoun County will serve as the foundation for a "state-of-the-art interconnection hub", according to the company. While specific details have not yet been disclosed, preliminary planning for the project is expected to begin around 2030. The facility is initially projected to deliver 85MW of power capacity, with the potential to expand beyond 300MW over time.

"As the global epicenter of digital infrastructure, Ashburn offers unmatched scale, density, and strategic importance", said Laura Ortman, CEO of Cologix. "Opportunities to acquire land of this caliber, in the center of Data Center Alley, are exceptionally rare. This investment reflects our long-term conviction in the market and our commitment to delivering next-generation interconnection, AI, and hybrid cloud services for our customers."

Ortman emphasized the company’s focus on responsible development, saying, "As we grow, we remain focused on building efficiently and responsibly - minimizing water consumption and optimizing power usage beyond industry averages. Having been part of this community for nearly a decade, we remain focused on being a responsible and engaged partner as the region continues to evolve."

A Growing Presence in Ashburn

Cologix currently operates one facility in Ashburn, known as ASH1, located at 21745 Beaumeade Circle. The three-story data center offers 120MW of capacity across 455,000 square feet. Construction on ASH1 began in 2020, following the company’s purchase of the former church site in 2018. The facility was completed in 2023.

With the acquisition of this new land, Cologix is poised to expand its footprint in Ashburn, further solidifying its place in one of the most competitive data center markets in the world.

Looking Ahead

Stonepeak-owned Cologix manages a portfolio of over 40 hyperscale edge data centers and interconnection hubs across 12 North American markets. This latest investment underscores the company’s confidence in Ashburn as a key hub for digital infrastructure and its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers.

The development also aligns with Cologix’s broader goals of expanding next-generation services, including interconnection, AI, and hybrid cloud solutions. Though the project’s full details remain under wraps, the planned development signals a long-term investment in Ashburn’s thriving data center ecosystem.

As Cologix sets its sights on the future, its approach to sustainable and efficient development could set a new standard for data center infrastructure in the region.
