Six build facts about Arsenal-1

Anduril has published more about Arsenal-1 than most defense primes publish about a plant, but the picture is still scattered across state releases, developer announcements and local reporting. The six cards below are the build facts that are public and checkable as of September 2026.

Why the headline numbers move between sources

You will see $900 million, $910.5 million, $1 billion and $1.4 billion attached to the same project. They are different measures: $910.5 million is the capital commitment in the state agreement (JobsOhio, Jul 27 2026), “$1 billion” is how Anduril and national outlets rounded it at announcement (Breaking Defense, Jan 16 2025), and $1.4 billion is the construction cost figure in the environmental site-plan records (WCMH via Yahoo, Oct 18 2025). Job counts move the same way: 4,000 is the round number, 4,008 is the contractual figure, and the 4,500 to 8,500 figures are indirect and induced jobs from the state’s economic-impact modelling (Site Selection, Q1 2025; Columbus Region). Six role families the program is hiring for

Anduril’s public Greenhouse board carried 2,313 openings company-wide on 2026-09-15, of which 134 list Ashville or Columbus, Ohio (124 Ohio-only, 10 shared with Costa Mesa, Fort Collins or other sites). Grouped by family, the Ohio postings show a factory moving from launch-team hiring into rate production and second-line stand-up. Counts are from the public board, pulled 2026-09-15.

The remaining 24 Ohio postings split between systems and mission engineering (10, mostly C2 integration and cleared AFSIM operations analysts) and security, IT and recruiting (14, including a special security officer, MSOC manager, badging lead and seven recruiting roles). Six recruiters and a recruiting-coordinator req on a 134-req board tells you the company expects hiring volume to rise, not fall, through the winter. Only 3 of the 134 titles state an active clearance in the title; most production roles instead carry ITAR U.S.-person language in the posting body.

Timeline: six milestones from announcement to rate production

The public schedule has held or beaten every date Anduril and the state announced, which is unusual for a greenfield defense plant. The milestones below are the ones with a checkable date attached.

What is not yet public: a completion date for Building 2, any schedule for Buildings 3 through 7, and the point at which the second and third shifts are added. The best available proxy is the hiring cadence: about 250 employees expected by end of 2026 (ClearanceJobs, Apr 2 2026), a 110-technician cohort running September through January (Scioto Valley Guardian, Aug 26 2026), and a public board that added recruiter and production-leadership reqs ahead of technician reqs.

Context: why Pickaway County, and what the state bought

Anduril says it screened more than 400 sites and chose Rickenbacker for a specific combination: a main runway next door so aircraft can be flight-tested where they are built, an air-cargo and rail logistics hub, water and power capacity, a two-to-four-year technical education pipeline, and proximity to Wright-Patterson AFB and its Springfield test site (source: Site Selection, Q1 2025). The region also carries a defense manufacturing history that local officials lean on, with Curtiss-Wright having built more than 3,500 naval aircraft in Columbus during World War II (source: Columbus Region).

The incentive package is the largest job-creation deal in Ohio history by employment and payroll. The 2.594% refundable Job Creation Tax Credit runs 2026 to 2055 and is worth an estimated $452.3 million if the more than 4,000 jobs and the roughly $63.61-per-hour average wage are delivered; for comparison, Intel received a 3.99% rate in 2022 for fewer direct jobs (source: Statehouse News Bureau, Jan 27 2025). JobsOhio added a $310 million grant paid over ten years, with commitments that must be maintained for a further 20 years, and Pickaway County sought $70 million from the All Ohio Future Fund for site readiness (source: Dayton Daily News via Yahoo, Jul 9 2025; WSYX, Jan 27 2025). State officials have said publicly that the money is contingent on the company delivering.

Supply chain is the other reason the plant looks the way it does. Anduril states that roughly 90% of its products can be made from commercially available components, and it is investing upstream in suppliers, including mines and refineries, to reduce exposure to defense-only sources (source: ClearanceJobs, Apr 2 2026). On the floor that translates into aluminum airframes rather than titanium, few castings and forgings, and minimal fixed automation in the early phases, all of which lower the skill floor for hourly hires and raise the premium on manufacturing and quality engineers who can design the process (source: Breaking Defense, Mar 23 2026). Energetics stay elsewhere: solid rocket motors are made in Mississippi and munitions are integrated separately (source: Breaking Defense, Jan 16 2025).

What Arsenal-1 means for the central Ohio labor market

Arsenal-1 is arriving in a market that was already tight. Pickaway County unemployment was 3.5% in June 2026 against 3.7% statewide (source: Scioto Valley Guardian, Aug 26 2026), and the same commuting shed is feeding Intel’s Ohio One campus, the Honda-LG battery plant, Rickenbacker logistics and several hyperscale data center builds. The families Anduril is hiring, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, controls and SCADA engineers, facilities and construction project managers, are the same titles those programs post. Anduril’s stated answer is to hire from commercial aviation and automotive, train technicians from Pickaway County’s four high schools and area colleges, and route hourly cohorts through OhioMeansJobs (source: ClearanceJobs, Apr 2 2026; WCMH/NBC4, Mar 25 2026; Scioto Valley Guardian, Aug 26 2026). Employers competing for the same people should expect the 34 manufacturing-engineering and 26 quality reqs on the board to set the local price for those skills for the next two years.
