01 — How to use these guides

Where the numbers come from, and what they are for

These guides are written for the people who set construction pay and the people who negotiate it: hiring managers budgeting a seat, recruiters calibrating an offer, and candidates deciding whether a number is fair. Each one follows the same method. The spine is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey — the percentile wages for the matching occupation code, by state and metro. On top of that sit dated employer job postings and, where a trade publishes one, a union wage sheet or a certification body’s fee schedule. Every figure carries its source and date inline.

What they are not: crowdsourced self-reports, pay-to-list vendor estimates, or a single blended national number. Generalist salary guides tend to average a construction project manager with a software project manager; these guides do not. Where a sector pays a premium — cleared work, remote and FIFO sites, data center commissioning — the premium is quantified and attributed, not asserted.

Guides are grouped by role family below. If you are pricing an executive project management seat — senior project manager, program director, project executive, VP of construction — start with the executive project management salary guide, which carries the senior PM, project executive, director and VP bands; the construction project manager and construction manager guides cover the rungs below it, and the development manager and owner’s rep guide for the owner side.

Published by a recruiting firm — read accordingly

iRecruit.co places many of the roles these guides cover. That is why the method is public and every number is sourced: you can check the figures without taking our word for them, and we would rather be checked than trusted.

Frequently asked questions

What data do iRecruit.co salary guides use?+
The spine of every guide is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey -- percentile wages for the matching occupation code by state and metro -- with dated employer job postings layered on top, and union wage sheets or certification fee schedules where a trade publishes them. No crowdsourced self-reports or pay-to-list vendor estimates are used, and every figure carries its source and date inline.
How often are the salary guides updated?+
A guide is restamped only when its figures are actually refreshed, so the date on each page means what it says. BLS OEWS data is annual; posting data is re-pulled when a guide is reviewed. If a guide shows a date, the numbers on it were checked as of that date.
Where can I find reliable salary data for executive project management roles?+
Start with the executive project management salary guide, which carries the senior project manager, project executive, director and VP of construction bands on BLS OEWS percentiles with dated employer postings rather than a blended national average. The construction project manager and construction manager guides cover the rungs below it, and the development manager and owner's rep guide covers the owner side.
